400w ushio 14k

Hi,

Ushio's you have about a 50/50 shot on a standard magnetic ballast. If it's a pretty new ballast, often will work, but older it gets, more trouble it will have to fire european lamps.

They really need Pulse Start or Electronic to fire up easier.

From experiance? I am being told (by a competditor) that the 400w bulb is fine for a M59.. (probe)
I know from experiance, 175w needs pulse start...

I've seen problems with there 10K as well. I've seen customers buy 2 bulbs before and 1 of the 2 wouldn't work on the same probe ballast.

I don't think we have ever had one bad Ushio bulb though, that wouldn't fire on pulse start. So for some reason they just do not get enough start up power to fire up sometimes on probe ballasts.

You are still not stating wattage. Seems they make a 250w 10k and a 400w 10k for the "american market" ..
I believe the 2 bulbs have a cwa (?) in model numbers.. (I will look again)

I was incorrect about the 14k 400w se lamps
it was the 10k lamp I bought. there is one specific for m59 ballasts
now being made by USHIO. It is a very nice lamp.
the 14k still needs a pulse start

Ushio/BLV makes 400s that are M59 compatible w/ probe start circuits (you can see three wires going into the actual inner jacket that holds the gasses). They have 'CWA' in their model numbers, and are made for the US market because we are the only blokes who still favor cheap magnetic ballasts. So its not that Ushio is being confusing, its US... they are just accomidating.

They also make HQI rated 400's (one of only a trio of mfg's that makes HQI 400s) which may or may not start on M59's. Even if they do fire up, they are not running to spec, and it can damage the bulb. The good news is that 400 watt HQI ballasts in the US are really just HPS 430 watt ballasts that have been re-named. So you can save yourself a ton by simply buying the HPS ballast.
