40B dimensions

Can somebody give me the exact outside dimensions around the trim for a 40 Breeder tank? I am going to start building my stand this weekend. Thanks in advance, Joe.

Is that the dimensions of the frame or the glass? I am not doing a center support. I am skinning my stand and canopy with birds eye maple though. I am doing the frame out of 2x4's though so it will be plenty strong. I am going to run a 30 breeder for the sump with a refugium and a closed loop w/manifold system. 1x250 MH and 2x39 T5. I want to go with a G1X Skimmer, but I might go with a Euro Reef if I can find a good used one at a good price. I am also doing an external overflow with the waterfall effect going over the back. Best thing about it is that it will be peninsula style! It should be sweet. We will see. I am also going to line the inside of the stand and canopy with that epoxy floor coating.

bastard... thats SWEET! I thought I went all out kuz i bought locline and a new mag7. I hate you joe. I'll go measure it now just for you... to make sure.

Thanks bro, I hate locline. I would rather have a short 45* PVC elbow sticking 1" into the water than a long piece of locline. I do have a locline Keychain that I got at IMAC though. I wont put it on my tank though. You know if you need any help just ask.

Occasionally they run a $1 per gallong tank sale. $30 for a 30 cube, $40 for a 40 breeder, $10 for a 10 gallon, and so on. I missed out on it last time they did it cause I wasn't back into reefing then, but I am not gonna miss it this time.

I think I might do this tank barebottom with the white HDPE board on the bottom to simulate sand. Then I will use the Live sand I have for the refugium.

I never understod why they call it a 40 gallon tan. If you use the tank volume calculator on the RC home page it shows 48.3 gallon with those dimensions. Anyone have an explanation?

Grande, is that lighting all in one fixture? What make is it? Are you planning to hang and/or run a chiller or do you think you'll be fine?

I have a couple 40 breeders. The 'published' size is 36" x 18" x 16", which equates to about 44.7 gal. If you generously say that the inside dimensions of the tank, that which would actually hold water, are 35" x 17" x 15.5", you get 39.7 gallons. In reality you wouldn't fill that high, and the glass thickness actual sizes, blah blah, and the inside dimensions will get you about 38 gallons. Put in some sand and live rock and you get down closer to 30 gallons.

I was asking for the outside diminsions of the plastic trim so I know how big to do the frame for the stand. I am going to do a retro for the lighting. There is someone that makes a fixture with a 250 mh and 2 T5, but I am doing a canopy so I don't need to pay the extra for the fixture. I dont know when they are running the sale again, but someone said it was going to be pretty soon. This tank will not be up and running until after October when I get my bonus. It should be a fun project. Anyone know how to take the sandbed out of my current tank and move it to my refugium without having a new cycle?

Well, if you want good advice, you might want to start a new thread since this is buried in the 40B dimensions thread.

But not to worry, I am here to offer my "never before done" guess and speculation advice...

You could always get new sand and seed it with your old. It's not that expensive when compared to everything else, you could get away with a single 40lb bag and seed it. Maybe $35 for dry aragonite using a CMAS discount. Its going to be tough though if you use your existing sand, I'd keep any fish in a quarantine for a while and have enough saltwater made and ready for water changes until you see any cycle finish, which should happen fast. Then again, you might not see any cycle, just extra released nitrates. But still, keep the fish away if you can to remove a bit of stress while your levels readjust.

Well, I am planning on doing an HDPE bottom in the main tank, but I want to use some of the sand from the main tank in the refugium/sump. Probably only about 10-15 lbs will get transfered. I think I will be ok.

So I went by Owl Hardwood today. It turns out that I am not going to be skinning the stand with Birds Eye Maple. It would cost me close to $1000 for the lumber to do it. Not gonna happen! I am going to be using White Maple instead. Almost as nice, but nowhere near the price. I should be able to build the stand and canopy for around $300 including the doors using this wood. I got a nice Chalice frag at Sharkys for my present tank today. Nothing else to report.
