There's a pretty cool aquarium screensaver you can get that lets you change things around as much as you want. Might be a better bet for you

I tend to agree with those suggesting that you slow down and do some (a lot) of research before you continue down a path ultimately destined for failure. Once you've done the research, questions such as this will be much easier for you to answer on your own.

I've often considered setting up a system that consisted of 2 40B tanks. One for the display and one for the sump. Before you run out and buy anything else though, think about what you want to do with it and make a plan, put it on paper and take your time.

If its a frag tank, your better off connecting it to the same system as your display. This way you do not need to buy filtration and sump for this tank. Just get it a decent light and some flow. Spend your money keeping your display in great shape, that is what the hobby all about and what people want to look at.

What do you plan to frag and why? If it for overflow/excess coral from your tank? A place to allow frags to grow out? Or are you trying to frag and sell coral to supplement the cost of the hobby. The latter takes a lot of work and is not a good plan as its harder than it sounds.

Better option is just buy or DIY a shelf in your display to let frags grow on it until you permanently mount them or trade/sell them.

will connecting the frag tank to the system over flow the existing sump? and just to grow out some of the smaller corals i have to later add into the dispaly tank

You need to figure out your water level in the sump and how much room you have for the back flow from a frag tank when the pumps are off. If done right it should not overflow. I have two tanks into my sump and when everything is off I have 2-3 inches of room left. By filling the sump to a about of water, when your pump is off it should no exceed that level unless you have a siphon issue. Bigger issue is how much water your system will "use" when running, ie the water in all the pipes. This lowers my sump level by 6+ inches. Much more than that and I would be SOL as it is close to my pump intake.

Lot of sound advice.Frag rack in the dt would be the simplest.I started that way ,then added another and when those kept filling up I used my sump with a simple led strip light and a screw in cf 13 watt bulb, using only 21 watts combined,I was surprised to find even some sps grow under it.Working on a real frag tank currently, but heres a pic of my temporary sump/frag setup.

My best advice for you is to do some research, let your corals LIVE first, then grow before you go chopping SH*T up for a frag tank...

I'm running a 40b with a 20l sump. The overflow are returns were from gl*******s.com.
The light is a 36" Aquaticlife 4 bulb T5 fixture.
I have a mix of softies, LPS and SPS. They all are thriving.
