40B with an engineer goby?

They can get pretty big not to mention they really like to dig so your substrate will constantly be a mess. I personally would pass.

^ +1 While they are a cool fish they get huge and earn their name as demonstrated by their constant tunneling. About 12 years ago I bought 3 of them on an impulse (they are so cute when they are juveniles!) and ended up tearing my rock work up 18 months later to extract them. Lesson learned - didn't do my research.

I had one in my 58 gallon(same foot print as a 40b) for 13 years with no problems. He was at least 14" long.

They will make a mess when first put in digging around but after that I never have problems with them. I have one in my 300g now.

Well my rocks will be sitting on the glass with the bigger base portions glued together.

had to chime in on this one.....
i have one of these in my 75. he is about 4 - 4 1/2 long right now, markings are starting to change.
everything i have read here and anywhere else states that they are diggers and tunnel makers.....
mine never goes to the bottom or anywhere near the sand. top 6 inches of tank.
he's healthy. eats, plays in the current, not gasping for air. eats just fine with everybody else.
just curious as to why he's always up there?
any insight?
