My wife and I are newbies and I have a question about a 42 hex.

Can we use this tank for a small reef set up?

Thanks,

Billy

Welcome to the board here, and to answer your question, you can, and the type of corals you keep will depend on your lights, flow etc. If you have a tall tank it is usually more difficult for some corals, unless you have some very good lights.

What do you have for light, flow etc on your tank now or what are your plans? If you have any specific questions just let us know.

Right now all we have is a rena filstar xp2 filter. We have not purchased lights yet. We are looking at a HQI Pendant. It is the one that comes with the Solana Aquariums if you are familiar with those.

You should be pretty good on lights, but you will most likely need some more flow (Power Heads) and if you use regular xp2 filter material, I would rethink that as the foam is a nitrate factory. I have a rena on my 55gal, but only use live rock rubble and charcoal in the filter. I think you are moving in the right direction for keeping corals, just start with easy LPS coral at first. I'm sure some others will chime in over this holiday and give you some more advice.
