i posted a similar thread in the general forum but felt it was better here...fell free to delete the other thread mods....

i have a new 40gal setup (about 18" tall) for lighting i have a 65w PC with 1 10,000k and 1 460nm actinic. i still have the crappy 15w 4200k bulb and hood that came with the aquarium. both hoods fit...should i use this 4200k? should i replace the bulb with something else? it can take up to 19w...i would like to keep fish and some corals. thanks for the help?

p.s. is it bad to have the 4200k on there? (algea probs?)...thanks.

I would not use the 4200K on the tank. It can be ok over a refugium though. I don't know that adding another 19W would make alot of difference. If it fits in ok and you can get a higher K bulb though then it shouldn't hurt anything either.

I don't think the 19w bulb will make a difference either way except maybe to shift the color of the tank a bit. I would either replace the bulb with a 10k bulb (if possible), or maybe retrofit a T5 bulb setup into the canopy, or just disgard it completely.
