44g pentagon corner tank questions

So, I'm new to saltwater. I just got my tank setup and its cycling right now. I have 3 questions about my 44 gallon pentagon corner tank....

1. I want a wood canopy for the tank since I have to ditch the cheap plastic small light hood for high wattage lights. Does anyone make one? I rather not have to make my own.

2. I want a 250w MH with actinics and some led's, what should I go with since the shape is odd?

3. Could I use a sump within a 14"x12" area? The storage area for this stand is small.

Tank dimensions for light are 22"x22" and the front 3 sides are 13"

Here is what the tank looks like...

I found this I'm going to buy that is made for this tank

By the way, forget about MH lights, go with 4x24w or if you need it, 6x24w T5 HO. That's what everyone has talked me into, and it's plenty of light for anything you would want in the tank.

Johnsonz, are you talking about the plastic hood? I was thinking about selling mine to help fund the lighting.

No, the pic at the bottom, that is what I need. I just got the Catalina Aquarium 4x24w T5 HO, and the back of my glass hood, is fine, but the front is broken.

Also, for lighting, I wanted the option to grow almost anything, 250w MH would let that happen at 5.68wpg. I also was thinking about those LED's that compare to MH but w/out the heat. I know they cost more, but you save money in bulb and energy costs overtime.

i have a 54corner i was able to squeeze a small sump in. i imagine you could find one to fit. as far as a wood hood, you would probably have to make one or pay someone to do it for you. if you do that i would buy your fixtures and ballast and mount them to the hood. it would also keep the expenses down if you have to pay to have one made.

Mine has a small caulked in overflow in the back corner, and I have a small 5.5 gallon sump tank underneath. It's clean and didn't have to drill the tank, which can be a huge pain, and disaster. I can send you a pic later if you want to see what I mean.

Hey everybody! Please check this thread out. it's all for corner owners, and some of the people on there with sumps could probably help you out on figuring out something for your tank. Here's the link for the corner thread:http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1592474

And by the way, I would have to advise to leave any covers off your tank. Keeping them off helps keep temp stable, and aids in surface gas exchange. I'd recomend a 250watt MH light with maybe 2 or 3 Powerbrite LED strips for suppliment

Wow, thanks for the link, I got a lot of late night reading to do. I'll prob lose sleep over it tonight, thanks, it's already 2:10am, haha

Also, does my 44 gallon tall corner tank really need a sump? I'll just put a hang on back protein skimmer or one underneath like a cannister filter.

I know within the next year i'll upgrade to my 125g tank(buying a home sometime soon) I have and already have lighting for it,etc. I just didn't want to set up such a huge tank and have to move it in a year.

Yes it is! There was a split after about 38 pages, and now we are up to over 20 after the split. I think it started around christmas also, so it's only been up for over half a year! Please introduce yourself, and you will be happy you did. There's so much great info there, and the people there will be able to give you answers to any questions you have

No need for a sump. I run all HOB equip on my tank, and have for the last 6 years. I'd recomend something like Reef Octo bh300f, or 800s. Also Deltec MCE 600 or 300 if you can afford them. ATB has an awesome cone style HOB which would definately overskim the 44gal, but would still work great when you get your 125

i have a 30 gal hex. i bought my metal halide then had a friend build a wood canopy that is about 24" high, hex shape, and fits directly onto my tank (it just sits on top). i had him put a piece of metal across the top of this canopy, my reflector and bulb hang on this. i scrapped the glass top that came with my tank (no fish that i can imagine keeping has over a 24" vertical leap (lol) i have a hole in the side of the wood canopy which houses a fan for cooling. i could see you doing something similar (something to think of before you purchase the glass cover)
