46" bowfront eggcrate

Hubby did this for me today. Want to paint it, but what's safe?

Sorry, misunderstood the question. Krylon Fusion is the plastic paint of choice, tank safe above and below the water.

Are you planning to keep corals? I would think painting it would limit some lighting going through. Just a thought.

I bought black egg crate online. It's spendy because of the packaging and shipping, but I love it.



But I ran white for quite a long time. I think white looks good too.

I would go with black krylon fusion so that it matches the trim. Be aware that many fish see the 1/2" squares in eggcrate as places to aim for in their escape attempts. I had quite a few that were successful before I switched to 1/4" mesh from BRS. It would be a simple matter to zip-tie the mesh to the underside of the eggcrate.

Black was definitely my thought. I am going to do corals, but no sps. I worry that adding mesh will further dillute the lighting?

black and white egg crate will defuse light. that's what they are made for. netting won't have much effect. I started with the crate and changed to the netting. much happier.

Yes. It dose diffuse light. At least I can see the difference when I have the egg crate on or when the tank is open top. I haven't worried about it too much though. I mean I run my lights at 30% peak at the most. I have more power there if I need it.

Thats why I go with the screen (light diffusion) and it looks good. You can get all the framing and what not from BRS or your local Lowes/Home Depot.

I had to make a custom lid for my 36g bowfront out of eggcrate. I painted it black with rustoleum paint I think, at one point my tank did over fill, partially submerging the lid for a few hours, everyone was fine. I also attached netting to the underside of the egg crate. No body sells Framing kits for bowfront tanks, I looked and looked.

Tank is sold but here's a video of it.... Used about 100 small zip ties to affix the netting.

I'm thinking I might leave it white. Worried about light absorption with the black.

Yeah. Mine was white for about a year. I liked it a lot. So much better than the glass lid. I think yours looks good. Nice job on the cutting.

I left mine white. the only downside is it reflects light all over the room.
