I would go with black krylon fusion so that it matches the trim. Be aware that many fish see the 1/2" squares in eggcrate as places to aim for in their escape attempts. I had quite a few that were successful before I switched to 1/4" mesh from BRS. It would be a simple matter to zip-tie the mesh to the underside of the eggcrate.

Yes. It dose diffuse light. At least I can see the difference when I have the egg crate on or when the tank is open top. I haven't worried about it too much though. I mean I run my lights at 30% peak at the most. I have more power there if I need it.
I had to make a custom lid for my 36g bowfront out of eggcrate. I painted it black with rustoleum paint I think, at one point my tank did over fill, partially submerging the lid for a few hours, everyone was fine. I also attached netting to the underside of the egg crate. No body sells Framing kits for bowfront tanks, I looked and looked.
