I have a 47 gallon cube has been set up a few months 22" by 33" high thinking of setting up clown anemone tank originally was going to be a lion fish tank but I am kind of steering towrds the anemone I currently have only a shop light over the tank currious if a hqi 250W or hqi 150W would be better over the tank also currious as to which spectrium is best 10K 14K 20k I would prefer the 20 I do not plan to add any atinic bulbs just the one pendant I am thinking of a quad bubble or long tenticle and possiblly a green carpet anemone no corals a couple clowns (also undecided as which species) possibly a cleaner shrimp or two any input would be greatly appreciated

Curious if rbta, carpet or long tenticle would be happier under 150, 175 or 250 hqi and which spectrium would best suit their needs

Also considering maybe a pair of maroons or someother clowns that get pretty big because their will only be two fish in the tank anyone have any suggestions

Cstwise,

1. not sure about the lighting, but i have less height then you and have a 250watt, 10K(have to check the bulb on spectrum, lol).

2. The maroons i have seen are nice, when they get big and if you have a small anemone, they can be to agressive to it. Me personally, i would get 2-3 percs, just my preference.

A 33" tank is pretty deep. I would go with a 250 watt fixture. The light spectrum depends on you, but many anemone keepers that I respect seem to feel that their anemones prefer lights in the lower side of the kelvin range.

If I was setting up a clownfish/anemone tank, I would choose the anemone first, and then choose a suitable clown. Anemones are more varied in their requirements than clowns. Your choice of anemone will determine how much light, circulation, depth of sand bed and placement of your rock structure. While it is true that clowns will accept anemones that they don't occur with in the wild, I doesn't hurt to stack the odds a little in your favor.

As for including cleaner shrimp in your display, I wouldn't. They have a nasty habit of stealing food from your anemone, even after it is in the anemones stomach. It is also not unusual for a healthy anemone to eat a careless cleaner shrimp.

As Phil said 33" is pretty deep. If you get a rock living anemone it will most likely want to live pretty high up in the water column unless it's a BTA which may be happy mid-column. If you are going with a sand dweller I'd be pretty tempted to go 400w. I run 5500K lights over my 72g and the BTA and LTA are both doing well.

Reading phender's post (last paragraph) I am afraid that is what is happening in my tank. I went home at lunch today and noticed my cleaner shrimp standing in my BTA. The BTA had its mouth open. The shrimp pays way too much attention to it. Unfortunately, when I fed the BTA last night; it spit out a piece and the shrimp was all over. Now I fear that he is looking at the anemone like a buffet.

Here is a pic of the tank and the live rock I do not plan on adding any more rock the sand bed is almost 5 in the front and 7 in the back it is just over 20 lbs of live rock 2 pieces I also have a small refuge set up with some chateo out of my main tank I may add a euro reef skimmer later if needed I am assuming with only two clowns the bio load should stay pretty light I am really interseted in some sort of carpet anemone but also was quite fond of the rbta I had a couple of years ago I had before I switched my 55 over to sps is there any chance on keeping a species of both of these anemones in this tall of a tank I was hoping the carpet would stay on the sand and the rbta high on the rock

Just an update I went to Premium Aquatics today and came back with some snails a serpant star two cleaner shrimp and a PFO 250W pulse start retro kit and ordered a 14k Hamilton bulb I decided not to go with the hqi it was 100$ more everyone there seemed to think the 250 should do fine for the tank with most anemones what ever one I choose I also picked up a 4 in smart fan to install in the hood I made I almost went 400W but was afraid I would have a heat issue still have not decided of which clowns (leaning towards marrons if I can find a nice mated pair) or which anemone any suggestions would be appreciated

The 250W will be great.

Find a nice ane,one and put it in when the parameters are all stable. Once it's settlrd in find a beautiful pair of clowns. They live a long time so spend the money on a nice pair, what's $150 vs. $50 over 5 years or more that they can thrive in your tank?
