Picked up a new 47g column tank. Dimensions are 20w by 18d by 30tall. wife decided she would like to have some sea horses. just thought i'd go about and get your opinions on type i should give a go and cheapest. its kind of a budget tank. will be doing also softcoral and zoa's in the tank with a rock wall and skimmer.

I have that tank. I would suggest putting a deep sand bed in it (4 to 6 inches) . It is a very hard tank to clean the bottom of. Also, You will need power heads about half way down for circulation in the tank.

yeah i ordered 40lbs of sand and rock from marco rocks last night. i plan on eventually running 2 mp10's in it but for now it will be a couple koralia 1's

i'm worried about light, as i want it to be a budget, and all i got leftover is a 250w halide, which will suit me fine later if the sea horse dont pan out cause i can make it a full reef tank, but i dont think a 150w light would reach the bottem well enough to get the softies and zoa's.

What i'm afraid of with the 250 is to much heat for a sea horse

thats what i was affraid of...i dont want to invest that much money in the system. I'll get it up and running and see what the temps get to and go from there i guess. wheres a good cheap place to get some hardy seahorses?

How much heat do you think it will raise it? I have a 175 over a 20g high and it only get around 81 in it.

As 74°F is the recommended maximum temperature for seahorse keeping, 81 even is a WAAYYY over the point of allowing for reasonable chance of success.
Recommended tank size for a pair would be 29-30g.
