I was wondering if anyone here has seen an aquarium with a 48 inch light over a 5ft or 6ft tank. I am trying to have a gradient so that I can keep a wider variety of corals, as my current setup (6x54 watts) is too much output for my current creatures (soft corals and a clam). My light is 8 inches over the tank and I still need to keep a glass canopy over the tank to keep the light down far enough so that the polyps are more "happy" looking. I'd like to upgrade from a 4 foot tank to a 5 or 6 foot tank, but am unsure how that would look. The amount of "spread" I am getting at 8 inches above the tank seems sufficient from across the room, but things change when you actually make the setup.
I have an ATI Sunpower 6x54, and it's much more powerful than I could have imagined. I like the idea of keeping the fixture because of low heat output and adjusting the look with 6 bulbs.
I know that a 4 foot fixture over a 6 foot tank is a stretch, but they are much easier to find than 5 foot tanks. I was just hoping that someone around has tried this or seen it tried. I understand that the sides won't have bright lighting, and I think that using this as "low light" coral space and extra swimming space can work well with a mixed setup.
