5.5 Reef Confessional

I am hoping that you guys remeber my tank. 5.5 gallon rounded front with Southdown and live rock. I complained about my ammonia not going down...
Since we are all creatures of investigation, I decided it was time to find out why my tank was not getting any readng or why my reading are sooo whacky...

Dont say i told you not to touch it just yet... Phly

On Saturday I began to pull out pieces of Animals and Things live rock compared to the peices from Underwater world. Here are my findings.

1. UW rock did not smell bad or have anything on it that alarmed me

2. A&T rock stunk to high heaven and there was deep dark green mush all over the underside of the rocks..

I pulled all of the AT rock out and made my way to UW and bought 3 pounds to replace that rock. That night i test all of my params agains.

Amm 1.2
Nitrite .5
Nitrate 20
PH 8.3

Ran Another Test yesterday night when the RODI broke

Amm .15
Nitirite .1
Nitrate 10ppm

PH 8.3

I Notice that the salinity of the tank isnt right. My two test; the Instant ocean and what i call the bobber for salinity show 2 different numbers... 1.030 1.028.... BOTH WAY TOO HIGH...

Test my top off water and wouldnt you know it, Its saltwater NOT RODI.... AGHHHHHH ( Must have been a casualty of the move from the Patriots Denver Game. Got a new bed in that night and furniture. )

"Side Note" Who delivers funiture at 5 oclock on sunday......?

This is when the RODI Bust and now Blange is going to feed my poor soul 5 gallons.....

Moral of Story: No More Animals and Things.

Now im just waiting on this mini cycle. The tank had cycled already Phyl thats why i kept saying I should have gotten a small spike from putting in that rock not a jump from .00 to 2.0. The rock fully uncured and luckily i had no one in the tank.

Update still waiting on my Akinydos. Hopefully soon cause they guy is only holding them for me for like two more weeks......

please don't put those clowns in that tank if there are is still detectible ammonia or nitrites (detectible nitrites just mean that there is ammonia in the water that is still being converted) those are really nice fish, and I'd hate to see them fall victim to poor water quality.

The lesson that you should learn from all this is that any rock that you buy should be cleaned before you put it in your tank - cycled in a separate container, and tested to be sure that it is finished cycling before you put it in your tank - especially a nano reef tank.

Dieing sponges or algae (the green slime) should have been washed-off when you got the rocks home - might be time to re-read some introductory material on starting-up a reef tank.

I promised I wouldn't preach anymore, but, well - you kinda asked for it :p

I'm not trying to be mean, just a little tough-love so that you don't start adding casualties to the list :(

Im not new to this

Im not new to this

I washed off the rock before i put it in the tank the first time... I broke up a peice of rock in half found that green stuff inside the rock.

I was told the Rock was fully cured and it did not smell..

The tank had been running for a month already with safe parameters

I dont plan on putting those clowns in the tank for at least 2 weeks man i said that.

I know its tough love but i have never bought live rock that oozed out nasty dark green stuff.....

Cool - two weeks might still be a little early, but better than now

And dark green stuff inside the rocks!?! that is bizzare :(

There is no such thing as fully cured rock, that's the safe approach!

And A&T is not focused on reef aquariums, stick to food and dry goods from them. And check expiration dates! Let's just say I'm a fairly reliable source when it comes to their business practices!

We'll get you going with the RO/DI today. I pm'd you. LMK
