For a back-up generator consider going with natural gas (if available in your area). This utility keeps running in spite of power outages so should be good for most emergencies.

Dave, I had planned on waiting till I could afford a nice propane generator but Cabelas black Friday sale had 4k watts for $300, so I decided it would do for now, since that was way down the priority list. Eventually, I will get an whole house generator, along with a big propane tank. Propane is so expensive these days, so I went with electric everything except the stove. I have a 50 gallon tank for that. It's so much nicer not having to worry about old gasoline. Thanks, Kyle
