Sanjay,

You are correct, I saw that when I first posted link above. Some how I thought Rik would know what fish it was - or and for sure John.

I think your on the right path with what it is A. blochii = ringtail surgeonfish.

Hey Sanjay, thanks again for the great day Wednesday...

Good job on the id. I am near 100% sure this fish is A. blochii. It is definitely not A. dussumieri. This fish came direct from the diver to Rik from Hawaii, so that helps in our search. The only other possible species it would be is Acanthurus xanthopterus, which is very similar to A. blochii, but has the orange spot around the eye that goes forward, rather than behind the eye like yours and that seen in A. blochii...

Here's some photos to compare... two shots of A. xanthopterus first...

Here's another shot in addition to the one above of A. blochii...

Again notice the spot around the eye... This is not a "lavender tang" either, which is Acanthurus nigrofuscus... also found in Hawaii. The color will only come out more as your guy gets older Sanjay... I had never quite looked at it too much in Rik's tank, but as it's grown its colors have developed and have helped in IDing it... so many of these monster Acanthurus look similar, combined with differences in juvenile and adult color, combined with the way they change color from moment to moment to show mood as we saw when we added him Wednesday... all of this makes for a tough ID but I think you nailed it with A. blochii...

Good luck with the new semester :)

John

Nice Sanjay!

Thank you so much for sharing. I know what thread to come back to when I am ready to make my tank bigger :)

And I know, who to come back to when I want to make my tank bigger :D :D :D

I just posted one, a few days ago. Only thing changed since then is the addition of the A. blochii.

John, Craig, Rik, Chris:

Enjoyed your visit, and thanks for the fish and frags. Nothing beats hanging out with a bunch of reef geeks :-) I usually have to leave town to do this.

Sniff, sniff......No PLC or motor controls? I'm crushed. :sad1:

Very nice tank Sanjay, dunno why I had found the thread before.

Lol... no PLC or motor controls... that is true. With an engineer like Sanjay, I suppose I would expect to have seen more DIY controls and such. ACtuated ball-valves, makita/X-10, computer linkups, controllers, etc. An automatic water changing system maybe?

Sanjay maybe it's time to change the title of this thread since the tank is most definitely real now :-)

Unfortunately its because I am an engineer, you don't see too many fancy DIY controls (even though I have a PLC, and bunch of modules to go with it). When it comes to tanks I prefer the KISS principle.

There are too many things that can go wrong as it is.. why add more.

I am just surpised no one sounded the call out for more picutres, proclaiming that a new thread title deserves some new pictures :)
