500g is finally online!

I have 70g full of macros now... are you saying to put them in the dispaly or just in the 100g fuge that is ready to go?

icu2 is stating to place it in the display, that way when you add Tangs to the tank they will have a "natural" food source avail...

Also... what exactly is the phosban reactor for? Do I need it or should I wait to add it? What about a carbon filter. I currently am filtering into a 150g sump through micron socks and about 100lbs of live rock. I know I will need kalk/calcium as I grow the system but what about these other things?

Phosban (Rowaphos, etc) remove phosphates from the water. Although it's somewhat important on most systems, it's not super critical until you are debating introducing SPS. You _can_ get by without it watching your feedings closely, skim wet, and utilize a fuge with large amounts of macro.

Personally, I would suggest grabbing the Geo media reactor. It's the one on the right in the picture below. I run both carbon and Rowaphos in mine.

As for when to put it in, that's kind of up to you. If you have the resources/setup that will allow you to bring it online now, it won't hurt. If you wait until your cycle is mostly complete or over, that works as well. Either way, I would consider the option.

Phosban is used to remove phosphate... phosphate feeds algea... You don't want a high phosphate levels in any tank... Carbon is used to purify the water by removing alot of other things...

Depending upon what you want your final tank t look like putting the macro in the display could be a bad idea. Depending upon the species it could get rooted in the rock and you will have a very hard time getting it out.

There are so nice tanks out there that have some planted macro however if you decide to change gears later on it will be no fun getting it out.

Ok.... so I got a media reactor (GEO from Phishy's)... I am going to run carbon in it until the rock is cured... I got a better test kit (salifert) and redid the amonia and it said 0.5. Looks like It is heading in the right direction.

I am moving Macro over to the fuge.... and seeding the sand. We will see if the pods start to grow.

I got the phosban stuff but am not going to run it until after all the really big water changes are done.

On my to do list...

Calcium reactor (GEO)
Controler (thinking Neptune input on this would be good)
Ozone (no clue what to buy)
RODI upgrade (100gpd now need to bump that up a bit)

Fish (still trying to figure out what schools to do)
Corals (more soft than hard but definately want some SPS as well)
Inverts (have the RBTA want that big white one Phishy has but have no place to hold it. Planning on Nasarius and mex turbos... Id also get in on a scarlet group buy)

What is missing from my to do list? What am I not thinking about?

Ive got a few large leathers if you are looking for somethig like that. I can always frag them when you are ready. Heck I might even get rid of a colony or 2.

I am sure I will be interested in some.... My wife realy wants a Long tentacle leather... she likes the flowing look. We really want the tank to look like it is moving all the time.

Well I was reading the Salifert kit wrong... it is actually 1.5. I have run multiple tests now and that ammount of Amonia is confirmed.

Just a waiting game now. Should I throw my 4 Chromis back in yet or let it drop down more? I have them in a holding tank on my other system. They are fine where they are; however, if that level is safe I would love to see something swimming in the 500g sitting pretty much empty in my living room.

ok ok.... I will wait... it is just killing me to look at this monster and have nothing in it to look at. My 125 just dosn't really impress me anymore since I have built this one.

Patience is the on part of the reef tank I cannot buy.

Get a flash light out at night you will be shocked at what all is in there. Trust me it is loaded. It is not Bonaire but there is a lot in there.

:)

I have done that.. I haven't seen much yet at all. There are some hermits and a couple snails... there were some worms but I think they all died durring the amonia spike.

I did see one crab that had fallen out of the rocks and died... I think it was an emerald but it seemed whiter and maybe even kinda furry.

But he died and became lunch for the hermits pretty quick.

All dedicated wiring is now complete! I now have 3 dedicated 20a circuts for the display and fish room.

I turned on all 4 400w MH for the first time tonight... OMG I think it looks pretty good... what do you think

WOhooo, my fuge is working evidently! I see hundreds and hundreds of little pods all over the acrylic. I thought they were bubbles at first then I looked closer and they are pods moving around. Some of them have little white things on their ends that kinda look like an egg?? Any ideas if that is just eggs or just the way they are?

I moved a cup of sand from my established fuge and about 4 handfulls of macros to the fuge over the last couple of days. I see the big pods all over the fuge.

The tank is looking really sweet. I like your rock work. I know I will be going through the same thing with the 240 when I start to make the switch. But then at the same time I will be planning on what exactly I will be doing with the 125. I know it will be Fish only, just haven't really decided which way I want to go with it.
I can promise you it wont be any of those Glo-Fish. ;)

Did another 200g water change today.... how long till I should retest the amonia and expect a change?

Also... are my 4 400w HQI lights going to bleach out my rock? I have been running them some over the last 2 days and it appears that the rock is getting whiter. Is that something I should be concearned about or is it normal?

the rock is normal but the answer is yes they'll bleach then should recover if H20 parameters are in line. the water changes will slow the cycle a bit but will potentially keep organisms from dying due to elevated amonia nitrite levels in the tank.
you heard it before but patience is the key :) right now. getting the fuge going will help quite a bit also.
