55 g needs fish

What are the small fish you have in the setup? How many? what is the aquascape like, lots of caves and hideouts ?

A lot depends on the amount of live rock you place in the tank as that will take up space.

If you just looking for size:

Pygmy angels.
A 55gal tank would be the min. for a Kole type tang.
Hawk fish.
Tomato clown.
There are a couple of large Dotybacks/Basslets that would fix in, like the Cateye or Dampiera.
Large Cardinal.
Puffer fish.

I will set up the tank around the fish I select. A small puffer sounds good. Most of the predators I like are too big (ex. triggers).
I will have live rock lbs and HOB filtration suited for this tank.I am picking up some live rock I set aside tonight.I have a few weeks to select the fish so I am taking my time picking outa show piece occupant.I don't want a shy fish either.1/2 my reef stock hides untill feeding time.

well i used to have a 55 gallon and successfully kept at the same time a: 6 inch panther grouper
6 inch lionfish
4 inch huma trigger
12 inch snowflake
3 in marron clown
1 inch puffer
med sized hermit
eventually though even with water changes and filtration they all got sick and died from lack of space now i have a 150 gallon with same fish and a few extra. anyways looking back at htis 10 years agao i was given bad advice from lfs trying to sell me more fish, when they should have been selling me a bigger tank instead, though not as much was known even that lenght of time ago, so my advice no is even with a 150 is to go always on the side of one less fish!!!!! you could probably do 3 inches of fish for every 10 gallons to be safe though round it to about 12 inches of fish, maybe more or less depnding how messy they eat and how wide around they are good luck!!!!!!

Whats in your 40g predator tank ?

One Undulated Trigger and one Purple Spotted Lobster

Good Question...

I have had her for 2 1-2 years since I got her at like about 1 - 1 1/2 inches... she about 3 inches in length now, I expect another year or so with this tank then onto a 90 Gallon.

I understand how large this fish can get, no I am not going to try and house it in the 40 gallon ( actually a 48 gallon ) forever. Until I have problems with levels or with her she will be in there for like another year and a half or so.

Overall from what I have read the fish could finish up around 12 inches, but probably not that big because I have a female with is usually smaller with this fish.
