55 gallon inhabitants

I have the following
cleaner shrimp
Diamond stopped goby
peppermint shrimp
2 clown (false perculas)
1 yellow tang

I am kindda looking for center peice fish. I wish I had more space. But was wondering if that pyramid butterfly would be a good choice or if anyone can suggest a good center piece fish. I was thinking of flame hawkfish. But does this move around or just stay in one place like the gobies?

My YT doesnt stay in one place. It follows the clowns everywhere. Looks like its protecting them or hiding behind their back. Either way it moves all over the tank.

I would say in terms of size, your YT is the center piece fish.

If you're looking for some cool colors, I'd go with a fairy or flasher wrasse. They stay the right size for your tank but have awesome colors and are active.

Flame hawkfish I hear will eat your shrimp, and they stay on the rocks and sand.

The pyramid butterfly will get too big for a 55g tank. It will be bigger than the YT.

Some of them do, but not all. Depends on the type of wrasse. Fairies and flashers do not eat shrimp/crabs/snails.

fairy or flasher wrasse are very costly. I dont think I can afford those. I think I got a tank a little too small for some colorful fishes. All the fish stores say blue tang which is 1 inch in length is ok but I dont want to take their word. They are sales people after all.

yeah, it will be great for a couple of months, unless you plan to nearly triple your tank size in the next year or so, I would stay away from the blue tang.

If you are going to upgrade the tank, then a small blue tang would work. I have a blue tang in a 46 and a 55, and they are both doing fine (both are going into a 300 gallon reef soon!) One is about 2.5 inches, and the others is about 1.5-2 inches. Never gotten sick, they eat nori and frozen stuff like pigs. Definitely one of my favorites. I'm sure they will brighten up their swimming habits in a bigger tank though!

i wouldn't suggest buying a fish and saying you're going to upgrade...most of the time it never happens, a lot of ppl just use that as an excuse to try to justify their purchase of a fish that will never life a healthy life in their too-small tank. also, it would most likely fight it out with your yellow tang. either get a fairy wrasse or soemthign else small, most of the things you have suggested aren't going to work...just keep looking, there are tons of small yet colorful fish, i'm sure you'll find one you like enough...or you could just leave it like it is right now, and let your tank grow and mature some, maybe you'll be happy with it then...patience is always a plus.

p.s.- decoydave, that thing i said about people not upgrading like they should after they say they will was NOT a shot at you, i see you are already working on getting your 300s up

My orange diamond gobi vanished today. I dont see him anywhere. He was digging the rocks badly probably he went under the rocks and one fell on him or something. Is it possible they jump?

gobies can jump, check behind your tank and in the overflow. he could just be hiding.

anthias are very difficult to keep, not recommended for a beginner. they really take a lot of care. you have to entice them to eat, and most people suggest feeding them 2-5 times per day, which can be difficult if you have a job. they need to constantly eat, especially when young.

once they hardy up, they certainly can be fed less and in larger portions, many do this with success, but this is after 6 months - 1 year of intense regimented feeding. i'd recommend against them. plus, you really could only have 1 in your tank, and the tend to do better in schools.
