I have a 55gl set up right...I was thinking about changing my 150gl freshwater tank to a fish only saltwater...my 55gl is a year old..can I transfer the water over to the 150 ??or start from the beginning with rodi water ?.or put in all the 50 gallons of water in there and top off the rest with rodi salinity of course...

The new rock you add should be cycled (you can do this in a Brute trash can) before you transfer over the rock and livestock from the 50. I just moved all my corals and livestock from a mixed reef 50 into a 120 without any losses. I would also recommend using new dry sand and not attempt to reuse the sand from your existing 50.

I see both sides on the sand, keep old or put new dry sand in. Personally I always just rinse mine well and reuse it. Depending on the depth of my sandbed I usually add some new to iit. But ALWAYS rinse your old sand very well in RODI water before putting it i the new tank if you reuse it.

Ok yeah thanks peeps for as skimmer size I should go above 150 capacity. .meaning get a skimmer for a 200 gl tank instead of one for a 150gl tank....also I have play sand in the 150gl tank now because its freshwater;; I should toss that; and add dry sand right ???

Since you should not use the play sand. Start the new tank with new sand new water. Then transfer stuff once its up and running. Moving it from one to the other with some new some old stuff is just not worth it.. Of course and live rock you can move over. and add more if its super clean and cured... Just get it stable before you move any fish.

Man you guys putting me to work hahahahaa..taking out the play sand,,, I wonder, I have lace rock and lava rock, nice big pieces. Can I reuse them...?:spin3:

play sand is horrible though, i wish i would have taken pics of my FW tank at it's worst before taking it down, i let it get bad because of a bunch of fry in it and i didnt wanna vacum them up, but the algae was a thick forest green mat that pulsated with the flow of the tank, was really nasty lol. on the other hand, the fry LOVED it. Oh, it is also much to small for any kind of flow, much too small, i put in 2 RW-8 in there on medium settings, and 140 pounds of sand was all stacked on one side over night.

I understand, , I see you have a 150 set up,,im still thinking about it because I love africans but them saltwater fish is exotic bro... but on the other had a friend of mine giving me a 75gl tomorrow:p, so if that the case I can set the 75gl up as a african cichlid tank and make my 150 into a fish only saltwater tank, and give my daughter the 55gl, she currently have a 29gl. dont know yet ,:rolleye1: running my mouth:dance:

is it a 6' or 4' 150? A 75 is a really nice dimension i think for a reef, and my 4' 150 can be an epic PITA sometimes lol...its got a scratch...if i cant remove it, i may switch to a 4' 120 lol.
