I picked up Brian's 57 Rimless Oceanic tank and Joeswoodworks stand last Saturday and figured I would start a thread on the transfer from my 38 gallon to the new tank. The 38 started out in 1998 as a 55 gallon fish only marine with an under-gravel filter, a sandman (fluidized sand bed) HOB filter, and an air-stone driven skimmer. Over the years I added lots of live rock, upgraded to an Aqua-C Remora skimmer, and changed out the HOB filter to a marineland with a bio-wheel. After a move about 6 years ago I transferred it to the 38 gallon with new compact florescent lights and kept some soft corals like Pulsing Xenia that eventually took over the tank. We moved down to Allegheny county about 3 years ago and between the move and a heat wave I crashed the tank when I set it back up. Since then I have just maintained it with no fish; reading a lot and waiting to figure out what I wanted to do.
My wife finally got sick of a tank with no fish about a month ago and told me to figure it out, so I jumped on Brian's tank when I saw it on here. I had been looking for a deeper 36" wide tank drilled with a sump and that fit the bill perfectly. I set up the tank the day I picked it up and moved about half my live rock into the new tank. Last night I moved over everything else to start taking down the 38 gallon.
I am running 6 T5 HO bulbs over the tank with a Hydor Koralia Evolution 750 powerhead for circulation. I may also add a maxijet 1200. In the 20 gal sump I am running the Remora skimmer, a reactor with phosban driven by a MJ 1200, and my heater. Salt mix is Red Sea Coral Pro and water parameters are: Nitrate 0 ppm, Phosphate .04 ppm, Alk 7.6 dKH, Calcium 410 ppm, Mag 1420 ppm.
I would like to run a mixed reef, mostly softies and LPS but maybe a Red Monti Cap too. Fish load will be minimal, the LFS has a breeding pair of Clark's that have been in the store for the last 3 months that I am thinking about. I had a Maroon clown with a bubble tip for about 6 years that I really enjoyed so I was thinking about another one of them if the Clark's are gone by the time I want to add fish. I might get one other fish later on, but I am still deciding what that might be (any suggestions)? Right now I just have a mess of snails and hermits, two feather dusters, a leather coral, a small Xenia frag, and some button polyps.
I'm always open to constructive criticism so if you see me making a mistake let me know. My LFS is thinly stocked, but gets soft corals from The Fish Place in Tonawanda every few weeks. I have been looking online, but the only place I had experience with was liveaquaria from 9 years ago. Any suggestions?
