58 Gallon

After some changes with regard to tank size, I am now beginning to set up my new 58 gallon oceanic RR. Hopefully, I will be getting pics, but for now here is a description of what I have and plan to have. Suggestions are welcome.

58 Gallon Oceanic RR Tank and Stand with mega-flow kit

20 Gallon Long for sump
Three sections. First is intake with Skimmer. Second will be fuge with over/under/over baffle separation. Third is return with over baffle separation.

Coralife SS 65

Eheim 1260 return pump.

Future Equipment - 36" Current USA Outer Orbit Lighting (150 HQI with 2x96 PC)
DIY Kalk drip
Eventually closed loop.
Auto top-off.

Future Inhabitants:
Pair of True Percs
Flame Angel
Mandarin

Soft corals/leathers.
Clam?
Lower lighted stony corals.

Any suggestions? I am new to this, so any info will be helpful.

After filling the tank and starting up the pump, I have found NIAGRA FALLS in my room. Holy noisy!! Trying to trouble shoot and quiet it down, but no luck so far.

The skimmer air intake seems to be a culprit. I added a length of air tubing after the silencer with an air stone on the end of it which helped a bit, but not as much as I had hoped. The pump itself is making some noise too, but I did expect that to a certain degree.

Mostly, the noise is from the water flowing from the tank to the sump. Lots of air coming down. I have tried adjusting the piping in the overflow without much change. The tubing is the black ribbed stuff that came with the kit. Changing that to vinyl smooth stuff helped a bit, but the water level in the overflow would cycle up and down, with spurts of air into the sump that became annoying. Now went back to the blacked ribbed stuff.

I need help!! This just might drive me mad!! I don't expect it to be silent, but I would like to keep it to a dull roar.

I have the Corallife SS 65 it works great, i have to clean it outside because my dad says it stinks up the whole house. I already have the 36" Current USA Outer Orbit Lighting the only thing that bugs me is the shadow left from the center brace. Besides that it seems like you have the design all down. Can't wait to see future pictures.

Are you going to use sand or go BB?

Just be careful with the angel, lots of people put them in and have problems with them munching on their corals. Once you put them in, it's no fun taking them out.

shag26272 From what I gather the mega-flow kit is a premade durso stand pipe. I can even adjust the heighth of the standpipe due to the adjustable nature of the design. The noise itself is coming from below the tank. I am not having issues with noise in the overflow itself. Below the tank from the bulkhead to discharge in the sump is where I have a lot of noise. Too much flow? I wouldn't think so. I am planning on getting the acrylic mount with PVC exhaust and filter sock to see if this helps at all. However, I will still have the issue with noisy water flow through the tubing itself. http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=BSAMK

dwhit0102 Good to hear somebody with a similar set-up! What sized tank do you have? Fortunately, I don't have a center brace, so I won't be having that issue. As far as sand bed goes, I currently have 30lbs araganite. Looking to add another 20 lbs or so of LS when I do my 40-60 lbs of LR. Have you done any mods to your SS? I have been searching for ways to quiet down the air intake to no avail. Also looking for any other way to modify the SS to improve it if possible.

techigirl78 Yeah, I am not sure myself of the Flame Angel. I like it, its a gorgeous fish, so we will see when the time comes. It will be quite a while before I am ready to put one of those in there. He will be the second to last addition next to the mandarin.

Thanks for the replies. I will get some pictures in the next day or two.

How is the drain to the sump plumbed?

If that's where the noise is coming from, perhaps a few pics would help diagnose why yours is loud. Maybe not, but worth a shot if it gets your tank quiet :)

I too would skip the angel. Figuring with luck you'll keep it for many years - that just seems like a long period of risk, or of avoiding certain livestock due to a fish. Just my take, though :)

I've got a 58rr, there's quite a few out there. Quite a few just lovely ones too ... IMO a wonderful sized tank, and lacking the center brace - a good one to light.

How do you have the below-tank drain plumbed?
What size pipe/hose?
Output below sump's water level, or above?

What's the 70's dimensions?

Do look around for other 58's ... there's quite a few:

I'd love to see any more threads folks know of for lovely 58g tanks ... there's quite a lot, really. Glad to have another joining the club :)

There's lots more ways ... those are just a couple stony-focused tanks - thus the excessive lighting, water movement, and power bill :D

over0066,

I also have a 58RR with a 20L sump. I found that most of my noise came from the drain into the sump. After fiddling with various PVC combinations, I came up with the following. I've angled the elbow so it's just above the water and gently pours into the tank - it is almost silent.

Its made of 2" PVC mated to 1" spa-flex.

Here are some pics.

Currently I just have a 1" ID black plastic accordian tubing that came with the megaflow from the bulkhead down into the sump. I have the depth of the drain about 5 inches below the surface.

mpcart - That looks quite nice, and seems like it would take care of a lot of my issue. Is spaflex smooth on the inside? Part of my issue is the Accordian tubing I have. It creates a rapids type noise as water flows down. I tried changing it to plain vinyl 1" ID tubing, and it started to create fluctuations in the overflow with "burping" of air every few seconds into the sump. Unless somebody else has any ideas, I think I will try that.

Does water flow out the top and bottom? Or does the top part of it just act as a vent for air with the water flowing to the bottom?

I am at work now, but if I have time when I get home in the morning (night shift), I will post pictures.

Thanks everybody for their input!!

Might I interject and ask, do all Oceanic 58 RR tanks have the box in the left corner? I thought I had seen some that were centered. I'm trying to make a decision on my next tank. Thanx!

The tank I got 2 weeks ago has the overflow centered. Another in the store at the LFS had it off center to the left. I didn't request anything specific. I just said I wanted a RR 58.

Hope that helps.

A person near my hometown is selling off all his liverock. He says it has good coralline coverage and sent me a couple of low quality pictures. Its clear there is decent coloration, but there were a couple of darkish green areas that he did state is algae. I am still waiting on my lighting, and curious to know if it is worth buying it now, when I won't have the lighting for a week? It is inexpensive ($3/pound). Any thoughts?

The new ones have the `megaflow' and it's centered. Older ones had it on the left, a more squared overflow.

Do you have an output on the drain line like the image shown above?

I get a LOT of gurgling without one of those, or if I have the output below the water surface. Perhaps I would try lifting it slightly above the surface to see how that affects noisiness.

Spa-flex is smooth inside. The burping of air is because their is a lot of air in the drain tube and it needs to escape. That is the point of the drawing I posted. Air and water can escape in two locations (top and bottom). Another benefit is that microbubbles are reduced and don't get into my main tank. I initially had my 20L set up like yours and I couldn't keep the microbubbles out of the main tank.

I eventually switched from a three compartment system to a two compartment system with 4 baffles in the middle (1 1/2" apart) that slows the water down and gives the bubbles plenty of places to escape before entering the return section.
