5gal filtration (2 tanks)

I have live rock and sand and a HOB filter, no skimmer. Right now there are crabs and snails in each. One is going to have a small mantis, the other, a barnacle blenny.

Should I rinse out the filter pads weekly? I put in new ones once a month.

Well in my opinion a 5 gallon tank is too small for a Blenny. I would only house the smallest of Goby in a 5 gallon such as a Neon, Clown, Trimma, etc. As long as you have adequate amount of live rock, good flow, and keep up on your water changes you good to go. I would only use a HOB filter in a saltwater tank for added flow and maybe to run some carbon, and sponges and such in a saltwater tank is bad since any uneaten food, waste, or other debris that gets trapped in the pad can possibly raise your Nitrate levels. If you do continue using the media I would try and rinse it every few days although everyday is best.

I only use filter pads once in a while. Usually when doing waterchanges and cleaning the tank.
