I was at my LFS and they had 2 Golden Teardrop Maximas, one seemed to be close to 8" and the smaller was around 5"-6".Anyways they were $130 for either and I thought it was a pretty good price, just wondering what you guys think. It looked like this one from ReeferMadness and its $160 for a 5" clam.

when there too small they need to be feed and there mortality rate is high. the 3" to 4" range is about the best. when there larger then that then there already set in there ways so to speak, and its hard for them to adjust to new lighting, water ect. and thats even more so with wild clams like the teardrop Maxima that 3s1k is looking at

I guess I'll pass then,I don't want it to die on me especially after spending $130.Its such a nice looking clam though:)

Well, I never heard before that bigger ones were more sensitive to change, but I'm no expert. I would try a 5 or 6 inch clam.

I had a nice orange/green teardrop shipped to me and it was around 8 inches. I had no problem acclimating it. It is my display piece. If you want the bigger clam I say go for it just make sure your tank is ready for a clam that size.

See thats what I was wondering about,I got a 120g and it might look a little out of place being so large.Other than that how will I know if my tank is ready for it?

Its been set up for more than 1 year my water quility is very good with Cal at 420-440ppm.I run 2 250watt MH's for my lighting.

Heck I got a 50g with 4 clams. Nothing wrong with that. I do dose a lot of calc however because my tank is mostly sps. I think 1 year is long enough for a tank to mature enough for clams. IMO as long as everything else in your tank is healthy there's no reason to think new additions(in this case clams) will do poorly.

The pic doesn't represent the clams pattern that well, but it is decent and I only paid $60 for it. No matter what the pattern is I think that $130 for a golden teardrop is pretty steep. I wouldnt pay that, but is it was a multicolored teardrop which I have seen ranging $200-$300, I would think about it...

I have the same basic configuration and I think my clam looks great. The only problem is I only have one...

Our LFS had a clam-o-rama a while ago and here are our prices:
3-4" Teardrop maxima $25
2-4" Neon blue crocea $25
5-7" Neon blue crocea $30
5" Squamosa $30
I bought a squami and a crocea, both doing excellent
If we can get these prices in Wisconsin, I think you should be able to find better price for your maxima. If you really like the animal, then bite the bullet before someone else snatches it. Otherwise be patient and wait for a better deal.

You guys are spending $60 on a maxima or regular squamosa, teardrops are ALOT more expensive. $130 is pretty cheap for a good sized teardrop, i'd say go for it. Everytime i see them there in the $150-$300 range.
