6 month Update on my 29g Seahorse Tank

Nice gorg. I'm lookin to get some. did you get it at a LFS or online? I'm kinda shy about keeping them as I hear they have a limited survivability w/o special feeding.

ED

Thanks, I got it at a LFS. I've read the same stuff, but figured it was better off at my house than there. Unfortunately, they are not the most knowledgeable when it comes to SW. They had two of these, mine looks like the pic above, their's has never been open when I've gone back in there and it's looking pretty rough. I would say it's close to dead. They also have blueberry gorgs, close to death as well. They swear they are not because that's not what is on the invoice. The gave me the species name on the invoice, I looked it up and it's a scientific name for some fern like land plant. When confronted, they just said they trust their distributor. Anyway off topic, my specimen seems to be doing well, and only time will tell.

where can you buy it? I live in the Bay Area (CALIFORNIA)

Yes it is illegal supposedly, but a lot of LFS do sell it. I live in the south bay, and recently got some from Amazon pets on Branahm avenue In san Jose. Its calurpa Taxifolia and the grape kind. Also, about 4 months ago, I got some other kind of calurpa from Brian's Fish world which is also in the south bay...

Okay thanks.
Why can't you buy calerpa in CA, I know you can't but why?

Calurpa Taxifolia was found growing somewhere in southern california and taking over the costal waterways. So they banned ALL calurpa

Thanks again, everyone, I will have to try to get a full tank shot uploaded here today or tomorrow.

Dave

Nice tank. Both the caulerpa and the xenia are growing well.

Edge, it depends on the gorgonian. Non photosynthetic species will almost certainly starve and die (the nice colourful ones :( ).

Some photosynthetic gorgonians are easy to keep and some are not. I do not have much first hand experience, so hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

Your gorgonian looks nice Dave. Are you feeding it at all?

Fred

Not directly. It's getting whatever crumbs are in the tank for the fish feedings. I would say that it's photosynthetic. It's open most of the day when the lights are on, and the polyps stay open about 1-2 hours after lights go off. I've been watching it for the past several nights now.

Here's some updated photos taken today. I've recently done some pruning of the prolifera.

Thanks, I'm sure yours looks better than you give yourself credit for. I never think mine looks as good as other peoples'.

Dave

... and it certainly isn't as but ugly as my tank. ;)

How is that gorgonian doing Dave? Have you seen any signs of growth on it?

Fred

Fred the gorg is doing fine, it still opens fully every day, but as far as signs of new growth, I'm not noticing any.

Dave

Cool. I recently purchased a gorgonian that looks like this based on an opinion from Eric Borneman that it is indeed photosynthetic.

His info comes from contacts in Europe that are having good success with it in captivity.

Fred

Well, I've had it for about 5 months now and it opens fully everyday, just no noticeable growth.
