6 month Update on my 29g Seahorse Tank

Feb Update

Feb Update

Well, it's been a few months. I've lost the gorg, it lasted over 6 months and succomb to algae growth, I couldn't keep enough flow on it. I also lost a batch of Xenia in the upper left...it lost a battle to the large sinularia in the bottom left. So here's a few pics from today.

I'm sorry to hear you lost the gorg. Mine is still looking OK, but no real signs of growth either. I feed mine daily and will be setting up a dosing pump to add the daily dose of food over a longer period of time. I want to give my gorg as much feeding time as possible.

The tank still looks good. Its not all crowded with a jumble of coral and stuff.

I prune the caulerpa once a month, otherwise I prefer the overgrown look of the prolifera for the SH tank. Thanks for the comments Fred and gussy.

i have come to the conclusion that seahorse tanks are just not meant to look Outstandingly good like reef tanks, but yours is one of the best ive seen!

From the frying pan into the fire... ;)

Its a matter of perspective. Some of us think that those outstanding tanks jam packed full of colorful corals look down right artificial.

To me, the horses just look more natural and at home in an algae filled environment. Its a real pita if you want to keep a few corals as well.

I also find that the horses are more comfortable with the extra cover the algae provides. I see more of my horses when there is lots of algae in the tank.

Yeah, right now I only have the large sinularia and few mushrooms, GSP, and a few zoos in there. The SHs hang out in the caulerpa hunting for pods or are perched on the left side of the tank. It works for me and them.

i wish my calurpa looked that good. I think im going to get some prolifera, because my taxifolia is UGLY!! and my horses dont like it much

It's been a while since I've posted any updates. The tank is still going strong after 1.5 years. I haven't done anything to the tank except prune some caulerpa. I'll get an updated FTS after things open up this morning. I wish my reef tank was as "set it and forget it" as this SH tank. Anyway, here are some pics of the girls since the last time I posted.

Here's a couple more pics. Couldn't really get a good FTS today for some reason, but it really hasn't changed much since the last one...the only difference is change +/- in the density of the caulerpa. Enjoy the new closeups for now.

I love your tank. I am in the process of cycling a 37 gallon seahorse tank for a high school marine biology class that I am teaching. What supplements do you use, how often do you do water changes, what salt mix & where did you purchase your horses?

Thanks,
Wilma

Thanks for the compliments.

These next answers are how I do things and are not recommended by me to others just because I do them. Little disclaimer for anyone that wants to start up the flame thrower.

I use Kent's liquid Pro Buffer dKh and Essential elements at the recommended dosage every 3-5 days. I don't do water changes as a regular maintenance, only for dealing with problems. I have never done a water change in the 20 months this tank has been up. I use a protein skimmer non stop, 24 hours a day, a HOB Tetra 300 filter, and an Aqua Clear 15 HOB filter. I feed one cube of frozen mysis a day, using a modified worm feeder on a suction cup. I have several astrea and turbo snails, blue leg hermits, an emerald crab, a sand sifting goby and a yellowhead jawfish as tankmates. There's about 30 lbs of LS and 20-30 lbs of LR. Original salt mix was IO and I purchased the SHs from my LFS.

OK, that's about it....flame away :), but it has worked for me for nearly two years and I have a similar maintenance regimen for my reef tank.
