60 Gallon Cube Fish Suggestions

Hey there,

I have a 60 gallon cube that I just put together (build thread here) and I am looking for a couple new fish to add to what I have in there now. It's a mixed environment with more corals than fish.

I had a clown and firefish that get along really well in my BioCube that are continuing to do great together after the move.. They've been together for well over a year now. I had a jawfish who never left his rock cave but in the move I have no idea where he buried himself in the new tank.. Haven't seen him in almost a week!

Looking to add some more peaceful fish to the tank.. I had a Royal Gramma in my BC that went after my firefish so I got rid of it. My buddy who works in the industry said that was very rare and I can probably get one again and this time with more tank space and rockwork they won't fight over homes.

Any other suggestions? How many fish would you put in total? Thinking 3 more at most, but not all at once.

Grammas are territorial with their space, but give them the room and they're fine. Make sure you have a bunch of caves for the fish.

Definitely get a shrimpgoby and a pistol shrimp. Just don't put any corals on the ground or the pistol will use them as shoring/doors/etc.

I'd say 5 small fish would be just fine in there.
Clown
Firefish
Gramma
Goby/pistol
One more, at least.

Heres the stock in my 60 cube:
Flame angel
3 bluegreen chromis
Valnetini puffer
Purple firefish
Starry blenny

My 60 cube has

1 Black clown
1 Two spot Blenny
1 Firefish

Going to add

Active swimmer (Black axil chromis or royal gamma)
Bottom Dweller (Shrimp goby of some kind)

Debating putting in a flasher wrasse or 3 small cardinals depending on activity.

You can definitely add more than 3 fish if you wish. I have an adult maroon clown, potters angel, royal gramma, and fuzzy dwarf lion in my mixed reef 60 cube. All big eaters and big personalities. Keep up on your water changes and have a good skimmer and you should be ok. Also, as was posted before, make sure there are lots of caves and arches so each fish can have "its own" spot to hang out.

That said, I have always liked pearly jawfish if I had a peaceful tank.

^ Nice, sounds like a fun tank.. Have a pic?

Here's mine as it sits now.. Pretty lonely with only 2 fish! I wish my pearly jawfish would re-appear but its been 1 week now since last sighting and honestly I think he dug his own grave.. Fool.

No tank thread, it is on my to-do list. The lighting is a full spectrum, dimmable LED fixture from Coral Compulsion, and I am currently installing some t5 supplements in my hood to reduce the spotlighting and shadowing from the LEDs.

I would do a blenny (that eats prepared foods) in your tank

Beautiful Potters angel. LFS has a nice one eating prepared foods. I would buy it but I already have a flameback angel

I have a mixed reef 60 cube also. Currently I have a Labouti Wrasse, Bartlett Anthias, pair of Picasso Clownfish, Midas Blenny, Red Mandarin, Red Scooter Blenny, Chalk Bass, & Helfrichi Firefish. I just evicted my Flameback Angel and Clown Goby after watching them nip the SPS polyps.
I'm moving in a few weeks and will probably add a Hawaiian Flame Wrasse during the move.

I ended up getting a Royal Gramma and a Male Squam Anthias.. Everyone is getting along well and the tank looks way more active now with these 4 in there. I don't think I want to add anything else for a little bit. I added two shrimp when adding the Royal Gramma two weeks ago and the shrimp both died! Unsure what was up with that..

What kind of shrimp were they? How did you acclimate? I have never had much luck with cleaners...

They were scarlet cleaners.. We acclimated them for 20 or so minutes.. Think the acclimation was too short? They just didn't seem to eat in the tank at all which is the total opposite of my last cleaners in my biocube who would lose it when the mysis was dropped in. Maybe I just got bad ones

Well, I'll have to buy another firefish.. I turned off the return pump to let it back siphon into the sump while I went to the garage to get some saltwater to change out and I came back to find my FF stiff as a board on the floor.. He took a leap of faith no pun intended :-p. Sucks because I had him for 2 years! Unsure what made him scared enough to take flight but oh well..
