600 gal display/900+ gal build thread in the Chicago 'burbs.

Some pictures of the tank. Didn't want to disturb the fishies in the quarantine tank since it was already lights out.. so no shots of the equipment room.

Yes, its starting to look like a golf course in there. On the plus side, the pods are swarming everywhere. The sand is thick with them.. it moves :)

Fish get transferred from quarantine to main tank next Saturday :). I need to start working on some frag selections now...

That is some serious clean up crew you got there!

You're smart to QT from the begining. I decided not to QT my first couple fish. I told myself I'd QT once I had something in my tank that was worth protecting. BIG mistake. I introduced Brookynella to the system with a Clownfish. My Tangs showed signs of infection over the last couple days. I somehow managed to catch them, gave them a freshwater dip and place them in QT. Now I get to go fishless for a month. Yipee!

Wade I'm guessing the pods are those little white looking stars thingys on the front of the tank? If so I just noticed tonight I have a bunch of them on my tank tonight also.
I'm guessing they good to have in there ?
Btw great looking project you have going on there.

The white stars you are seeing are actually miniature stars. I forget the scientific name off the top of my head. The rarely get bigger than a pinhead but can get as big as, oh half the size of a penny. You seldom see them with all their arms as the bud off new stars be releasing an arm.

Copepods or "pods" is a generic term for tiny animal life. They range in size from too small to see with the human eye to just barely big enough to see if you pay close attention :) They have multiple legs and look like aquatic insects. If you google copepods you can see the zillions that exist. Most are good, some are bad in our tanks. The bad ones are pretty rare.

Pods are some of the best cleanup crew. They get into all the small places and get at everything. Some fish love to eat them. They are the sign of a very healthy tank :)

Did you buy a pod starter kit? and if so from where and which one. Also wanted to say how much I enjoy your build, keep the posts coming!

Bob

No, I bought a little bit of live rock (100 lbs or so) and they came in with the live rock. I also took about 5 lbs of sand from on of Miztic's established tanks so I assume some may have come from there also.

I bought an 8oz jar of ocean pods from these guys and put them in my fuge. LiveCopepods I see some on the front glass but they are really small (you could fit a dozen on a pinhead). Do they disappear into the sand and rock and how big do they get?

Pods will disappear to just about everywhere, they'll go into/on the rocks, into the sand, you name it they'll be there once they're reproduced enough. Some will even be in the water column.

Once the batch takes off you will see thousands on the glass. They will be anywhere from just barely able to see with the naked eye to 1.5 mm or so, several of my adults looked like funky ants on the glass.
They will be everywhere, on all surfaces in the fuge. Plants/glass/rock etc.

Typically how long does this take?
Thanks

Depends, but in a newly set-up tank from what I've seen it's about a month before you'll see a huge spike in the population from a lot of dead matter and detrius. After that it will go down a bit but I'd say a good couple months.

Depends. Pods feed on stuff like Phyto. If you don't have anything in your tank atm you might consider dosing DT's Phyto. You'll see a large bloom in a few weeks.

Oh, so now I not only have to feed the fish, crabs, and snails, I have to feed the pods too. :D
Where do I get my hands on Phyto?

I was just going to mention this. Good idea to add some.

When I do have fish in the tank does that mean I don't have to dose phyto? What do the pods feed on if I have fish?
