60G Cube plumbing

Going to get a 60g marineland cube. i know these are some work with the overflow plumbing.

i was wondering if anyone knew the size of the bulkheads for the return and drain? and how should i go about plumbing this to make it silent and efficient.

any help would be appreciated

They bulkheads are for 1" pipe. You really have two options.

option 1 - would be a durso type drain in one and the return in the other. Can be quiet, but not silent when properly adjusted.

option 2 - would be to use both the bulkheads for a bean-animal type set up. This would require the return to come over the back of the tank. These can be silent.

There is lots of information on both of these set ups so do a search to get some good examples. I went with option 1 on my marineland 60 cube. The little bit of noise I get is not bad and I wanted to keep the return in the overflow so I could keep the tank close to the wall.

actually i just did a large search on here lol found a few different ways to do it. one of the folks near me did it like you are describing in option one. i think that's the plan at least at this point. i receive the tank tonight.

i would plan on using black pvc to try and make it look decent.

You can if you like. I just used regular PVC since my tank is in a corner and no one can see into the overflow.

I bought my tank used so it had the megaflow setup...or whatever durso setup it is....I did have to widen the air hole in the drain line cap a touch to help it be a little more quiet. It was a back and forth struggle for a few days, but it's all worked out now.

I tossed the double elbow that came with the tank and replaced it with a tee, elbow and a plug. The tee went on the riser with the through line pointing up. On the top I put the plug and cross drilled some holes through the tee and plug so I could adjust the air. On the branch I put a street elbow. If you do that you will need to sand the OD of the plug and the ID of the tee so it will be hand adjustable. Sorry I do not have a picture.

maybe you can take a pic sometime lol? im not familiar with DIY plumbing. this would be a first ReefReady tank for me

Use both bulkheads as a Herbie setup, one as the drain and the second as the emergency. Bring the return over the top to the tank. Dead silent. It's a tight fit but can be done.

After reading both options I think the Herbie is the was to go. Looks easy to set up too
