Not really reef related but I am so excited I just wanted to shout from the top of a mountain. I just bought my first L glass and it's a 70-200mm f2.8L IS! I am so excited, I cannot wait! :bounce1: :bounce1:

Yeah I suspect with the 4 ft or so minimum focusing distance, I won't be taking many fish pictures 
But who knows, I might not ever want to take it off my camera. I did try one the other day at Samys and I must say it is VERY heavy! I am going to have to get used to that. But very excited to have a fine piece of glass in my arsenal. Thanks Recty!

Dont knock it for fish pictures I've taken quite a few with my 100-400 which lets in even less light than yours will, mine at 400 is at f/5.6 and this is one of the discus pictures I got a couple weeks ago...
Anyway, it isnt IDEAL using a telephoto for fish tank shots, but it's kind of fun. The great thing is I took that picture from across the living room, in the kitchen shooting across the breakfast bar. All the fish were just acting natural instead of like someone was right in their face with a macro lens, so the telephoto actually had a nice benefit.

Good point! My fish are all camera shy... Man the more I talk about this thing and think about the more I want it RIGHT NOW! lol
Anything I should be looking for in the lens? Any known issues? It is Date code UR so 2003 I believe. I do know that there is a pretty good size something (He says fabric, or lint?) inside the lens. It is pretty noticeable when looking through it (see pic). I showed the guys on POTN and they didn't seem to think it was anything to worry about. One person posted this link showing just how bad it would have to be to actually affect IQ.
Anyway, I have 3 days to inspect and make sure it was I expected. What is the best way to do this? I picked it up fairly cheap because of the object inside the lens so worst case scenario Canon is right down the street in Irvine and I have heard it's about $100-$150 for a full cleaning and inspection. May be worth it?

yeah I won't know until I get it, is it pretty easy to distinguish what element it is on? I guess if it was on the rear element it would be pretty obvious to see. Yes, I also heard that the flat or minimum rate is $158 or something... but may be worth it to get it cleaned up tested or what not, depending on what they will do for that rate.

The seller says that it appears to be towards the middle of the lens, but it DOES show up in pictures he says. 
Can a local camera shop do the cleaning or Canon the only way to go? He says a local camera shop can take it out for "very cheap". $158 is not "very cheap" to me... This may be going back, but I will replace it!

OK I sent that one right back to him. For what it was going to cost to fix it, it was going to cost more than a newer one with no issues.
I ended up picking up a UV date code for about $100 more, complete with box and everything! It is in almost PERFECT condition and the best part is, no particle to clean and thus $50 CHEAPER in the end. Anyway, I was so excited I called my post office and told the carrier to leave it at the hub and I would pick it up!
( my carrier will not deliver packages to our apartments and doesn't deliver until about 4pm anyway! ) So I was there at 9:01 to pick it up, hehe. First impression: soft... but after a +10 MA, very sharp! I am going out shooting with it today. I will post pictures later. I am so excited!

OK didn't get a chance to shoot yesterday but I went out today and took some shots of the bikes going up and down the mountain. Here are a few I liked. This lens is awesome!

Thanks , I was actually that close, The first shot was at 120MM and the second was at 135MM (next lap) had special access to the National Championships of Snocross,and let me say it was an awesome photoshoot. Couple more for your viewing enjoyment:
