Hi Roger

I downloaded the latest version from Tunze, installed it. No unit found

My computer recognized and installed it fine.

So it use COM 5, i switch to COM2 and set the flow to xon/xoff, still no unit found but i notice i got the this message

"COM2: the port "COM2" does not exist",
before "No unit found"

if i switch to COM5, i got the message
"COM5: the port "COM5" does not exist",

Please advice

It must be on Com1, 2 or 3. I would try again and it is worth trying another USB port and in some cases a shorter cable (particularly on laptops).

Thanks Roger, i have to try all my 6 USB port and finally only one works. Now my question is , if it still work with a 20 feet usb cable because my computer is 20 feet away from the tank.

Want to know before buying the cable

Thanks

The longer the cable the more problems you will tend to have, the main issue is that the program only waits so long for a response from the controller before it gives up. For a log cable it is worthwhile to consider a powered USB hub to boost the signal, that will usually allow a longer cable with less issues (more ports will probably work).

+1, i used 3 feet cable on my laptop and it works fine now. Thanks

Hi Roger :wavehand:

I have exactly this issue with my new laptop running win7 64 bit whereas it worked ok with my old desktop running win XP Pro, despite the long cable.

I sent the unit and cable back to Tunze UK but they reported no issues, worked just fine on their machines with XP. Like the op the latest software downloads and installs on this machine with no problems, but it just can't find the unit when you open the program.

Are the solutions likely to be the same?

In settings, set the unit t Com1, Com2 or Com3 and it should work.

Thanks for quick response.

Have searched in various places on the computer and cannot find any references to Com1, 2 or 3

Settings from Control Panel seems to refer to other hardware and sound devices and to default programs. In Device Manager I can see reference to various USB devices but would not begin to know how to make changes to these, or even if it is wise to attempt it.

So this takes me no further forward unfortunately.

Were you by any chance meaning that it is possible to change settings within the Tunze software itself?

Also, I have seen on another thread a reference to a new version of the software soon to be released? If this is the case might it not be wiser to wait until this is available before making changes to my computer's settings?

Unfortunately, I have never used Windows 7, but in Vista or XP under control panel, there is a communications set up and that is where you set the ports, this will probably be important even with the update, I have no definite release date for the update. Windows assigns the port number based on which port is used and how many USB devices are already connected. Another port or disconnecting other devices that aren't being used may also solve this.

Hi Roger,

Since this exchange I have been looking for a fix and also taking advice from people on Ultimate Reef here in UK.

One person kindly directed me to this site

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with-USB-devices

I downloaded the program and ran it, when it was able to diagnose that the issue is with the lack of a suitable driver in win7 rather than to do with response times on the long usb cable.

It found and installed the driver then put up the dialogue 'your device is now ready for use'

Sure enough it now works perfectly. The interface found a port which it reported as COM4 MC7096 V255.255.255.255.

I can now make new settings, receive from and send to unit and file.

Hope this is helpful to anyone else who reports the same problem.
