nice to see I'm not the only one with a bedroom tank! I got a 75 sumpless. You can put a small bag of carbon and a small bag of phosban in the other chamber on the reefoctopus. That's what I'm doing right now, and I have it on a timer to keep the tank quiet while I sleep. Are all those firefish getting along?

wow thanks for that advice on the chamber use on the protein skimmer. i may just do that when i feel my tank is in need of that.

all the firefish are getting along, but i do fear the day when they get mature and start fighting...... it seems like other aquarists report that problem. though it may take up to 3 years for the fish to get that fighting testosterone?

in the last few weeks, i've seen it a few times when two firefish go literally head to head. they swim in place, but head to head only for a couple of seconds. i'm not sure if they are kissing each other (i doubt that haha), or if they are sizing each other up for a potential fight... other than that, i haven't seen any aggression. i'm very surprised actually, not even the dominance act of "move out of my way, i'm going to swim right where you are because i'm more macho." heck if anything i see that from the starry blenny (SB) and one of the tail spot blenny (TSB) that swim through the schooling firefish to show off their "macho-ness", just by making the fire fish move out the way temporarily.

there are days that it seems i spend hours staring at the tank. so when i notice that one of the red firefish has a beat up dorsal fin, i actually chalk that up to swimming into the rocks too fast. i have yet to ever see one of them bite each other. in two cases, the dorsal fin is already grown back. as for the purple firefishes, their tail is a little beat up, i remember receiving them like that from the LFS. i'm keeping an eye on the tails to see if they don't heal up. but like i said, i don't see them biting or even chasing each other, so i'd be surprised if it doesn't.

i had to add a lawnmower blenny (LMB) from my other tank since there was a lack of algae for him. it's great news that so far the starry blenny has been relatively nice to the LMB. at first there was a couple nips or dominance acts, but now the starry seems to accept the LMB. it's hilarious to see the starry come cudde, literally sit so close where he's cuddling with the LMB. but after a few seconds i think the LMB is scared, so it swims away.

it's pretty awesome to see the tailspot blennys swim with the red and purple fire fishes! the tailspot blennies swims with them very often. once in a long while the starry blenny and neon goby even join in! i hope to get some video footage of that rare occasion when they got their swimming party going on :celeb1:

the only thing i dislike about my tank setup is the noise from the overflow box. i can't see to silence it. i think the last owner tried to do a standpipe setup, but the holes are maybe too big the rear side of the overflow box.

i'm not sure if i'm fortunate, but all 6 firefish stay out swimming all day. maybe 1-2 of 6 will hide during moonlight time.

a good picture of my flowerpot coral, i can't seem to get the colors to show up as good as when you're standing in front of it

not sure why i haven't posted this earlier. tank nitrates have been obviously good for awhile now, that's why coral was added, but here's a picture for proof

i decided to take a picture to post online. while taking this picture i hear this sound *drip* ..... *drip*.... *drip*... i quickly head to the sound and it's at the overflow box on the back side. my guess is that the pvc pipe fitting/connector is the problem. this overflow setup was put together by the previous owner. i'm going to take a look into it tomorrow. i guess the upside will be that i might be able to fix the annoying water sound from the stockman standpipe setup. I think the previous owner set it up wrong and therefore making too much noise. Hopefully I can figure out the problem when i disassemble the overflow setup.

i'll be in heaven if i can silence this thing!

summary: there's a leak at the green arrow in the picture below. do you have suggestions for making this overflow silent? what i've found online for the best option so far is Hofer Gurgle Buster (http://home.everestkc.net/jrobertson57268/HGB/HGB_construction.html)

i want to use this chance to fix the noise issue from how it was setup by the previous owner.

i have a bit more knowledge on plumbing, not much, but more than i did a few months ago. prior to this fish tank hobby 6 months ago, i knew nothing of plumbing, absolutely nothing.

after getting a fish tank at home, i've learned to plumb the return line from the sump and also an RO system with three 4 gallon storage tanks.

is there an option that's easy enough for me to do myself that would silence the overflow? is there a better option then Hofer Gurgle Buster ?(http://home.everestkc.net/jrobertson57268/HGB/HGB_construction.html)

Since the last post:
- i fixed the overflow piping. it's now silent! now the loudest piece of my setup is the skimmer. i've yet to figure out why my skimmer is so loud, it's around the same loudness of a stand fan (i think a stand fan on the quieter side [i've heard some stand fans way louder than mine]).
- i lost a purple firefish, who decided to jump between a crack of the lid and the back top side. the fish would have to jump at an angle too, what a lottery winner he was :(
- by chance, as i'm adding a banggai cardinalfish, that's the same time i start wondering why haven't i seen the 3rd purple firefish? i do some investigation in the rear of the tank on the floor and sure enough i found him.
- i've discovered some hitch hikers (i think it was on the rock of my latest added coral) 4 stomatellas and a Grape Caulerpa. i think my fox face fish ate some of that caulerpa, so it's not able to fully grow, maybe i'll move it into the sump to save it.
- my coral were spawning!!! the first one was the bubble coral. it let some red-ish colored smoke liquid into my tank. then later was my flowerpot (peach/green color). i actually didn't know what it was at first, which i feared it meant the coral was dying. I went to work to ask my saltwater expert coworker, and he informed me it was spawning therefore my tank must be in really healthy condition for the coral to do that. i've been feeding my corals Justin Credabel's GonioPower twice a week.
- i added a electric flame scallop, it's hiding in the rear side of the tank be hind the rocks. i found out online that others have had a hard time keeping it alive. i will make sure to give updates on this as time goes by.
- added 6 fighting conch snails (already had one in the tank)
- added 1 nassarius snail
- added a good amount of snails and hermits (maybe 1/3 of what should be there for clean up crew)
- there are soooo many bristle worms! i plan to pick up an arrow crab. i think i have so many bristle worms that they are filling up every hole in every rock. so i see them poking out of the rocks, as if each rock is a "full house"
- i started dosing kent's purple tech. i can already see the algae growing! it only took about a week or less to show signs of the algae. the algae is mostly green coraline, and some other areas of purple.
- added a lawnmower blenny from my office fish tank, because the algae was disappearing there and i had enough algae for him in this fish tank
- all the fish seem happy with this community. 1 fox face, 2 tail spot blennies, 1 starry blenny, 1 lawnmower blenny, 3 firefish, 2 purple firefish (used to have 3), 1 neon goby, 1 banggai cardinalfish, 1 electric flaming scallop, 1 rose bubble tip anemone
- i think the 2 purple firefish are scared of the banggai cardinalfish, eventhough i never see him aggressive toward anyone in the tank
- i haven't seen the rose bubble tip anemone for a week now... i hope he's hiding in the rocks and is okay... i can't find him

dammit i think i somehow broke my canister filter while cleaning it. i don't even remember bumping the unit on anything. the red arrow points to where i think it took impact, and then blue arrow points to where the plastic is now cracked and leaking water.

if there are any suggestions to fix it, i would appreciate it.

I can't suggest how to fix your canister filter but what I haven't read in your thread is your water flow rate and what your Nitrite levels are. A higher in tank turnover will help keep nasties in the water column so that they can get pulled by the protein skimmer. Would definitely help keep things more stable as far as your water chemistry.

since my last update....
- i've always used the drip acclimate process for all new arrivals from coral, to fish, to invertebrates
- added a green clown goby (haven't seen him since i added him in about a week ago) :sad1:
- added a zebra barred dartfish at the same time as the clown goby, i actually thought the dartfish looked too skinny when i purchased him. he's healthy and eating a lot now.
- added two fire shrimps (only one seemed to survive)
- had a fire fish jump out of my tank when i wasn't home. i have only a small gap in the rear of the tank, and somehow he found it and jumped at the correct angle :( am i just having bad luck? i keep the top on at all times besides feeding and water changes. :sad1:
- the bubble coral seems to have one bubble that is growing crazy big compare to the other bubbles. yesterday i discovered the big bubble has deflated or got popped. the coral itself seems happy
- added a sun coral which is beautiful! :D
- the electric flame scallop has been in the tank for a few months and doing okay.... but there is a weird colored blob growing on its lip. i doubt there's an easy way to try some surgery on it? maybe it's some type of algae growth
- i feed phytoplankton pretty often and also the GonioPower too
- the last picture of the tank doesn't look good... it looks much better in person

i think most people would suggest that i clean the back wall off, but that's where all my algae eaters go! i have a starry blenny, lawnmower blenny, and two tailspot blennies which all of them love to eat off the back wall. i don't think i see them eat anywhere else.

this sun coral is just gorgeous! the foxface is only this close because he wants food. he's such a pig! i feed him too much.

i was mainly trying to capture a picture of the Grape Caulerpa for myself, but it's not a very good picture. it's between the resting tailspot blenny and the bubble coral. basically in the middle of the picture

seems like the purple firefish don't care much for the banggai cardinalfish, ever since the banggai's addition, the purple firefish hide all day except for feeding time. though i never see aggression from the banggai towards other fish.
i miss the days of the purple and red firefish schooling together.
