For tequila I usually hit up the Cuervo Tradicional. It came out about 2 years ago and seems like the ultimate middle of the road. It's not Don Julio but it isn't Especial or some other rip-off either. People drink crap tequila and then say tequila sucks. Well, the same can be said of any liquor really.
Negra Modelo is alright, but I haven't had a mexican beer with any real flavor. This might be an artifact of what's mass produced (and exported) there. I mean, around here you have to hunt to find a brew that isn't made by Anheuser-Busch, Miller, etc. So what are the odds that a decent small time brewery is going to get anything across the border?
