75 gallon fish list

So Im going to be setting up a 75 gallon tank shortly here....well more like 6 months lol.

Im considering a fish list and going to be using a big skimmer rater for 100-160 gallons.

So here's is what Im considering so far:

My 2 clowns I currently have
Yellow Eye Kole tang
2 or 3 flame wrasses
Exquisite wrasse


How many more could I put in this tank with that skimmer? Im not real big on tangs so having one is more than enough for me and most likely that will be the biggest fish in there.

I'd advise against doing anything but bonded pairs of these fish.

If you want, a trio of flame wrasses would look great in your tank. The clowns and a small tang would fit in nicely as well. To contrast the flame wrasses a bit, I'd try getting a pair of royal grammas. Maybe something blue to really offset the orange and red of the flame wrasses.

What about a sand dweller? goby/shrimp pair or a jawfish.

Im not too fond of fish that dont swim around lol...ie cardinals firefish and so on lol

I forgot I was considering a royal gramma. They are just cool to watch.

For sand critters, I was considering a scooter blenny but the wrasses would destroy any pod population. So thats out of the door. Maybe a starry blenny. The one I had would eat sand and poop it out. He kept my sandbed bleach white.


For the offset you mentioned, Ive always wanted a mcnelli assessor

Oh...and the flame wrasses are the main focus of the tank so they are non-negotiable lol

Don't mean to gang up on you, "that guy", but that is patently bad advice for both species. If you've spent any time reading on RC, you'd know that. Please do your homework before advising others.

P.S. I like my fish in groups too. But those groups need to be alive for the effect to really work.

for blue, blue stripe cardinals, BSJ, Blue Assessor, and Blue Deborae Angelfish will work.

Like I said before, firefish, cardinals or anything like that arent going on my list. They bore me. They just sit there. I like active fish.

The only one that doesnt move much I would consider are assessors.

And not really a schooling type of person. It just doesnt seem to work well in home aquaria from what Ive seen and read.

Angels are up in the air. Im not sure Im willing to chance my corals to one fish and then have to rip it apart to catch one. I care more about the corals than fish anyway lol

Not sure if your upgrading from a smaller tank or if this is your first tank? But one of the things I like in a larger tank is motion be it coral or fish. You can’t get it in a small nano tank but can get it in the 75 if you do it right. So as other have suggested there is something said for smaller brightly colored fish.

Then secondly I like it when you see past the motion and see the small rock dwelling fish, pixie hawk or your small gobies. Some suggested a jawfish, awesome choice nothing beats a blue spotted jawfish (you’ll have to keep your tank a little lower on the temp though).

A trio of flame wrasse maybe pushing it depending on how you have your rock work setup and how much coral you’re planning on. If you want a trio you might be better in getting a trio of smaller flasher wrasses or fairy wrasses. I personally like wrasses in singles with different varieties. I say that even though I have a trio of eight line flashers.

In my opinion tangs are hit or miss on personality. Meaning you either get an aggressive pit-bull or a lapdog, either way last fish in the tank. If you want a tang you could look also look at a chevron.

Someone mentioned royal grammas, I’ve had good luck with them in smaller tanks, in larger tanks they have become the mystery fish of the deep. Meaning they love rock work (duh, that is where they live in the wild) and are not out and about all the time.

I'd stay away from the angels (except a bellus) unless you only want one and then you’re taking a risk at being reef safe. I got lucky and my coral beauty has behaved (knock on wood).

Final note if you’re keeping any wrasses or jawfish you’ll have to have the tank covered.

Ive had tanks before. I currently have a Biocube 14 with 2 clowns. They are going in the 75.

Well Im determined to have the flame wrasses. At least 2.

The tang is just so I can join the cool 'I have a tang' club lol. Id rather have wrasses than tangs. And Chevrons get too big for a 75. I buy fish for the tank I have. Not the tank I plan on upgrading to.

Also....speaking of rockwork, my rockwork tends to be very open and not just mounds of rock like I see alot of time. I think it looks lazy and uncreative. Which is why a RG wouldnt be a problem. The last one I had in my 40 breeder was always out in front. He would run and hide when you went up the tank but 5 second later he would come out and watch you lol. I like to keep my tank pretty open. No rock touches the front, back or sides.

Like I said, I like corals more than fish, so angels are something I would do in a fish only. I spend alot of money or corals...so risking them is not something I care to do.


A jawfish would be nice, but the space requirements and tank temps stops me from considering one.

And all my tanks gets covered. Not an issue. Im not like alot of people who will fight have a covered tank till they lose their whole livestock. I love BRS netting
