75 gallon reef build

I can't wait to see the attack video! I'm not too sure about peppermint shrimp chomping on majanos..I know that some will devour aiptasia (mine did). Be careful not to get duped and end up with the similar-looking camel shrimp, as they don't eat aiptasia. A reputable dealer is your best bet, unless you learn to discern the subtle differences yourself.

Have you seen any ammonia yet? Despite what your LFS said, I'd have left the shrimp in there. All it served to do was be an ammonia source as it decayed, which in turn would help propogate the needed bacteria. A cleanup crew would clean up any remains.

Oh it's going to be a warzone tomorrow. I'll hit it with the aiptasia x, then when the cycle is over I'll add some peppermints in there. Hopefully they'll get the majanos as well. I have more majanos than actual aiptasia.

I haven't tested the tank in a week. I live away from the tank until july, long story. Well I was thinking that, but my LFS told me that it would make the cycle longer. I know that there are many stores that are out there just trying to make money, but I really feel that these guys would rather see a successful tank. I'll do testing for ammonia and nitrites tomorrow though to see.

Just got home to my tank, with my two packages from marine depot! New toys are always fun! JBJ ATO, aiptasia x, and the two part Ca/Alk bottles. Came with a magazine from marine depot which is a bonus!

These bottles were way bigger than I thought they would be!

Not only do I have what I believe to be hair algae (bad because it's an algae, good because I've got more life in my tank!) But also little purple blotches around my tank glass which I'm thinking is the coraline stuff?

More updates in the morning! Got to get some sleep before D-day. Aiptasia won't know what hit em! :uzi::uzi::uzi:

Hey Bud, nice build thread! Everything is looking good. Just wanted to mention that if you seem to continue to have algae issues try adding a phosphate reactor. After a while I started having a slight issue in my 29g nano. Probably my fault as I was somewhat new to the hobby and I believe I was over feeding a bit. Once I added the reactor, I haven't had an algae outbreak since.

Obviously, a reactor shouldn't be an excuse for overfeeding but it is a nice bit of added security against the darn stuff.

Keep up the good work!!

Oh and +1 on getting some peppermint shrimp to aide in Aptasia control. I had an outbreak a while back from a snail I didn't quarantine that carried one in. Before I knew it I had Aptasia everywhere. Aptasia X does a decent job but I feel it's hit and miss on if they sprout back up. I got a pair of Peppermint Shrimp and within a week...no aptasia. Haven't seen one since! They're like my secret ninja weapons!! lol

Huge update

Huge update

First off, today is the day. I'm armed to my teeth, ready to kill these suckers.
Video will be coming, stay tuned tonight!

I went to my lfs today with a sample of my water. My cycle either happened really fast, or I just never saw it. The lfs said I was fine, and I'm trusting their judgement because it hasn't hurt me yet. Picked up 5 pepperint shrimp (armed to the teeth, the aiptasia won't stand a chance)

They are drip acclimating as I'm typing this. But anyways I skipped over the cool part... I CAN ADD ANIMALS!!!!!!! I know I know, I'll be patient. CUC this next weekend. Need to get an emerald crab cause I've got a moderate bubble algae problem. I'm also seeing thousands of copelepods on my tanks walls, mostly crowded around the hair algae. Some really tiny snails of some sort also have appeared!

I'll have lots of pictures and a video tonight for y'all, I'm too excited to do anymore posting. Haha, I'll be back though. Make sure to come check all this exciting stuff out!

Water parameters:
pH-8.3
salinity-1.025
ammonia-0
nitrites-0
nitrates-0
need test kits for Ca, Alk, Phosphates, and Magnesium

Thanks for checking out the build man! Hopefully you'll stay along for the ride! I need all the advice/input I can get! Well, this is my first tank, and I'm told that an algae break out is normal. I need to get tests for phosphates though. I'll get a CUC this weekend to help with the problem, and the kole tang I eventually will get will also help out. Reactors are on my to-buy list, along with a number of things haha! Thanks again!

That doesn't really look like bubble algae... Bubble algae is usually a dark green color, although maybe the camera is just making it look like that.

hmm, that's what it looks like through the glass. And from an above view its a maroon color. it's definitely squishy though and not just bubbles. What could it be?

Hahaha, I'll get a crab or two this weekend and hopefully they'll be taken care of. I just need to see that the peppermints survive!

Waiting on these videos to upload. They really aren't that great. I the iphone camera quality just isn't that great and I don't have the money at the moment to buy a $700 camera.

My mom helped me out with the first video, she's just as excited as I am with my tank!

Eh, your best bet would be to siphon the bubbles out. If a crab gets at it, he'll pop the bubbles which will release the spores into the tank. BAD.

nice haha. hope you get them all. never had the problem and hope i never do. also check your phosphate once you get a kit.. you seem to have lots of algae and i wonder if thaats your issue

Lookin' good man. Congrats on the shrimp. They're a good addition. Fun to watch and they should keep the aptasia in check.

Thanks guys, I hope I got them all too! Yea phosphate kit is the next purchase, along with ro/di and CUC

here's another video. I really need a fancy camera, just don't have the money to spend on one.
