75 Gallon Stocking Questions

Hey everyone, i'll be getting a 75 gallon glass aquarium pretty soon and I was thinking about making it be a FOWLR. If I go through with this then it would be my first FOWLR tank. I'd like to keep some larger fish in the tank probably averaging at a max size of about 7-8 in., but I'd have a few smaller fish too. I really don't know how much the bio-load would be able to support though. Hopefully some of you could give me some tips and suggestions on some good fish choices and equipment for the tank.

Forgot to mention before but all of the larger fish would be purchases at just a couple inches.

The Foxface is one of my favorite fish and it can go with pretty much any fish out there, including small ones. They are very peaceful and easy going and very active during the day, plus they have great personality. Besides a Foxface you can put in a dwarf angel like the Coral Beauty or Flame Angel. A small lionfish would also fit in great, like a Fuzzy Dwarf. Then you can add a couple of nice wrasses too.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about getting a fuzzy zwarf but wasn't sure if it would be ok or not. I'm not sure on whethr or not I want a dwarf angel or not since i plan on adding one to my 90 gallon pretty soon. Also is there any chance that I could keep a harlequin tuskfish? I was considering a foxface but not sure which one. A bi-color maybe? Any tips to cut down on the bio-load? I heard that some foxfaces eat fish poop. Is this true?

lol, that is true. My Foxface chases the yellow wrasse around when he's pooping. :lol: Wants to catch it even before it comes out. A good protein skimmer and a good amount of live rock will take care of the bioload.

Ok well that's good to know hopefully a foxface will also be able to help w/ the bio-load then. Still wondering about the harlequin tuskfish though. Also, how many fish could I have in the 75? I also am thinking about a tang and a hawkfish, and if a possible a trigeerfish. Maybe a picasso?

It really depends on the fish as to how many you can have. I would not put a Tang in a 75 gal, unless you plan to upgrade to a larger tank in the future. Same with the Picasso. They are too agressive for that tank size. A Niger would work though. I've had one in my 75gal for a while and it's been really good.

Sorry, I have no experience with a Harlequin Tuskfish. You could probably also keep a small Eel like a Snowflake. But if you do, make sure the tank is covered as they're really good at escaping.

Ok well if I got a tang it would either be a kole,tomni, or chevron tang. I was aslo thinking about the niger but they can get up to a foot long though, so i'm scared that it might get to big. Never gave much though about an eel. I like the idea though. If I were to get a hawkfish hopefully it wouldn eat it. Also just thought of something. How do i clean the tank and stuff without being stiung by the lionfish or being bitten by the eel?

Lionfish are not agressive, they wouldn't attack your hand on purpose unless they thought you were food or something. I have 2 in my lionfish tank and when I clean I just scoot them to the other side of the tank with a net. Most lionfish stings happen when the handler is not careful and doesn't pay attention where the fish are.

As for the Snowflake Eel, mine never showed an interest in biting me. When I put my hand in the tank, it runs in its cave and doesn't come out until I'm done.

I would be cautious about keeping a trigger with something as small as a hawk.

Ok well tha's good. Would a hawkfish be too small to keep with an eel? I was thinking a flame or longnose hawk. Also, are you sure a 75 would be big enough for a niger trigger after it reaches maximum length?

A niger trigger would eat a hawkfish. What if I got a large hawkfish and then after that i bought I bought a niger trigger at only a few inches long?
