Watching this build, as my goal is to upgrade my 170g dt to a 400g+ dt. I've already built the 300g sump side first. Thanks for sharing. :wave:
 
Gorgeous set up but I hope that tank is not sitting on your laminate flooring b/c in less then 1 yr you will need new flooring.. Made that mistake myself by putting my 120 on my wood flooring and never again. Just from the drops of water will get in between the cracks and the wood will start popping up on you. Just saying from experience.. I have my 120 on Tile in my FL room from that lesson i learned..
 
I just broke down my tank for an upgrade and moved my sump. My sump was put on wood wrapped in fabric to protect the floor. I have wood floors and have had several floods. The wood floors under the sump still looked new.
The areas in the next room where the damn dog pees on stuff are a different story.:mad:
I guess it depends on the quality of the wood floors and what you spill on them more than anything.

Here's the garage after setting it up as the fish room. Everything is finally in its correct place. No wood floor so no worries. And my brother in law will be taking care of all my evaporation issues with venting and or industrial dehumidifiers.

I built a seperate room for quarantine tanks, water testing station, and mixing barrels. Wanted to keep it nice and clean around the tank because I kind of have issues with clutter. Water will be pumped from the mixing barrels up thru the attic and down to the tank for water changes.

Still have to build a counter around the sink there. And maybe some cupboards. That will happen over the next few months.
The tank is filling now. Will be for the next week. Even though I did 2 water tests, Im sure I'll be losing a lot of sleep over it.
And just in case you were wondering. The platform is made out of HDPE solid plastic.

That's for doing fish that won't work in a reef. Maybe a couple angels, big crabs, maybe a small shark. Its still open. Might use it as a giant refugium. The small one will be full of mangroves. Will be hanging a light above it. All will be tied to the display.

Awesome build bro, I can't believe I've never seen this tank before... I'm surprised your not on Michigan reefers .... Can't wait to see this come together.... And here I thought I had the biggest tank in Michigan..... Lol :(
 
Well, then its time to upgrade! Just kidding. 560 is crazy big. Has anybody ever walked into your house and not go immediately to the tank? I'm guessing no. That's because its insane.

Not on Michigan Reefers. Seems like mainly a place to buy and sell stuff. More people here with big tanks.
How close to GR are you located?
 
I'm on the opposite side of the state over in Macomb county.... Yes I agree on Michigan reefers as well, used to be a great site with a lot of wonderful people... Now it's just a garage sale :( .... Well I look forward to seeing more of your setup!
 
Yeah it sucks about MR, but kinda nice too. I needed a mag float for 1" glass. Ever price those things out? They're like 150 bucks! So I posted in the want to buy section and a guy sold me one for 40.00.

Here's a couple shots of the tank and fish room nearly finished. 15 months to get to this point. Got the water change system from a friend. Fit perfectly. Decided to put it next to the tank for ease of maintenance...and it's cool. Didn't want to hide it in a different room. Had to build a little wall and move the sink forward though. But it works and now its all right there. Any flooding will go right out the garage door.
The wife's brothers came over and hooked up my pex exchanger to the water heater. So that's done.
Now all that's left is the cosmetic stuff like trim around the doorways, tiling the garage floor, redoing the door above the tank, finish the counter in front of the tank, and just fine tuning everything.
So I guess this build is pretty much done. At least as far as this thread is concerned. Can't believe it.
Planning on starting another thread on stocking this thing. Gonna just let it run empty for a few months, get some fish in QT, do some more research, and wait for winter.
Oh...and don't mind the fake plant, couldn't help myself. It will not be staying in there. And the chair is for my wife. She likes to be in there reading her book once in a while while I mess with the tank. I don't mind. Kinda nice always having someone right there if I need a hand.

I think you will have problems with that rock arrangement. With the rock piled directly on the back and sides like that there will be little or no water movement under the rocks, leading to stagnation and detritus accumulation. I think you should redesign the rocks to a more free standing and open structure.

Also, you are going to have trouble with the plastic plant. Considering the amount of detritus and low water movement you are going to get with the rock structure, I susect you will find you have plastic plants growing wildly out of control on all surfaces in little to no time. Please reconsider the plastic plants option.

Sure thing dave...I'll get right on that for ya. LOL. It's gonna be ok. There's plenty of room behind and thru the rockwork for water movement. I spent a lot of time designing the rocks and cementing them together so there is plenty of wide open areas behind and thru all the rockwork. So much so that I will be able to place pumps behind the rockwork. And as corals begin to fill in, I'll add more powerheads creating more flow. The picture doesn't show it, but if you saw it in person, you would see and understand.

Hey Thanks. When I glued that last piece of PVC together, I think a tear of joy fell down my cheek. I just stood there in silence....thinking to myself about all the time and money that went into it. Then something strange happened. A little voice inside my head said, "You are out of control with this thing. What is wrong with you?!" Thought about it for a bit, then I killed that little voice. He will never talk to me again.

RO unit. I could get a monster booster pump and a huge RO unit, but I've already spent more than I care to admit on this and those 2 things would run me well into the thousands. 150 gpd is plenty.
One of your posts said you live in the mountains...do you have a well then? Wondering because I live in the woods and have well water. Interesting to see what others with a well do to get perfect water.
My output TDS is at 0 for now, but don't know how long it will last.
Water going in is 230. So not too bad considering my last house had city water and TDS going in was over 300. My work city water is 360.

I have a well and water in is at 220, water out is at 1. City water at my old house was 70 in....I just ran about 1000 gallons through RO and also wondering how frequently I will need to change micron, carbon DI & membrane. I also was worried about draining too much from the well but a 90 GPD system never caused a problem. It took 10 days to fill the tank though!
