When talking with a rep from Rowaphos at MACNA, he stated that tanks with higher Calcium levels will cause the media to turn to stone.

I was running a calcium level of 375-400 ppm when my 1000ml of ROWA Phos turned to a brick. It does make sense that the higher the calcium level, the worse the effect will be, but there is also a compaction of the media with low calcium levels.

How long should I wait to see if it had a effect?

A couple hours should be plenty. However, I do prefer to wait 24 hours between making a change to the water chemistry and testing it again.

why would need a ball valve at every feed? the only reason I can think of is if you were going to reduce flow in that area and force more flow somewhere else. But if you were doing all that then you proably could use a wave maker. IMO the stop valve at the discharge of your pump is all you neeed to perform maintenance...........By any means I am not an expert

That's Exactly the reason. I wanted full control. Plus I need to disconnect for maintance.

I never listen to anyone about when I should change water. It has been working out to be about 15 gallons a week. I figure I'm there with the vaccum why not:)

Tonight I think I'm going to do a big water change my Alk and calc are really out of wack. I figure about 80+/- water volume. What would be a nice size water change?

The larger the water change, the better the balance will be re-established. Match salinity (specific gravity) and temperature exactly, and if possible match pH as well. To do that, I add a little baked baking soda to get the aged saltwater close to the tank level before changing water.

80% should be a good number. The most important parameter to match is temp. Also, be sure that water is aerated very well, especially since it is such a larger water change. And when doing that large of a water change make sure you do it with the lights off. A lot of corals will be exposed from the water and can bleach rather quickly.

WOW 80% I didn't know I could do that much. I did 30 gallons last night I guess I will do another big water change this weekend.

How often do you guys do the 80% water change?

Yesterday was a very exciting day.

I received some incredible frags from znut Reefer. It's actually the first time I ever bought frags from a non online vendor.

I have to say I'm very happy!!!actually I'm more happy with these frags than my typical online vendors.

The size of a Bali Slimmer was actually a small colony.

Here is what I bought

Hoeksemai
Turkani
Incredible Yellow Acro -freebee
Echinata
Bali slimmer-freebee

Don't think your automatically going to get freebees like that with him. I did spend a good amount of money.

I can tell you one thing I will be buying alot more from him. I never see pictures of his tank posted but I can tell you the pictures are amazing!

To most a bali slimmer is a very common coral BUT not to me. I always wanted one just like that Pink birdsnest I got from Ross. I have always wanted those 2 particular corals.

The colors on these corals are colors I have never seen before. I have to ask him if they were kept under 20ks. The colors are the most beutiful rich colors I have ever seen.

The 2 other corals that can compare in color are the corals I got from Jay and Ross. For example Jay's Chips Acro and Ross's frag of a aqua stag that he gave me.

I don't think I will ever buy wild colonies. I love the hardyness of captive raised corals. I also love particular corals and don't want to guess what the coral will look like down the road.

Who knows:)one day I might try reefermadness. But no time soon.

My bad, I misinterpreted your post above as saying you were thinking about doing an 80% water change to get things back in balance. Now that I re-read it, I see you were talking about doing a water change with water that is +/- 80ppm Ca from what your tank is at.

You can do large water changes, in fact Anthony Calfo recommends 100% water changes, but they aren't necessary. I have done 80% water changes on my old FOWLR but would never do them on my reef. Simply because the tank is 280 gallons and it would take a lot of room to make up 224 gallons of saltwater. It would also take a while to fill the tank, which would leave the corals exposed to air for longer than I would prefer.

I used RO/DI water with IO salt that I madeup. I never checked it. But you figure 80ppm calc on the new water?

You will be fine if the water change water is up to a couple hundred part per million calcium off from your tank. Since it is only a 30% water change, the overall change in calcium levels will be small.

Do you think maybe I should do another 30% this weekend? I really want to get my perimeters back in order.

It's hard to say what changed in my tank. But there was something out of wack. The only thing changed was that I added more Rowa. But I still doubt this made such a negative impact.

Well I was in panic mode just now. I decided to lean over and look at my Reef Tank Temp. It was 82. I usually have it dead on for 79. Do you think it is really bad it spiked that high?

I know Reef Tanks usually run hotter then 79. But I like to keep it there. I'm just worried because it never spiked that high. I know it had to do with my Heaters. So today I'm ordering a temperature controller.

Well no more procrastinating(looks like wrong spelling :) I bought a duel stage Ranco Temperature controller just now online. The only place that sells Ranco it seams is DIYreef? Jay said it is listed under aqualogic. I didn't know they were the same.

I'm not about to risk my Livestock on 2 30$ heaters.

Next is the Return pump. But I want to wait until I get my new sump.

Do you have a chiller running on this tank? I agree, no tank should have heaters running without a digital temperature controller such as a Ranco, Aquacontroller, etc. The cheap little thermostats that come with heaters are garbage. Yes, the Aqualogic temp controller is just a Ranco with the Aqualogic name stamped on it and the price doubled. Did you get a single or dual stage controller? Did you get the one with the outlets alread on it or the one that needs to be wired up? I have a wiring tuturial on the DIY page of my website that shows how to wire up the dual stage. I wired mine with power strips so I could have multiple heaters and fans turn on when needed.
