This was a reef until last September but coral is just not my thing and I've always prefered the planted tank.

It's still a long way off from what I have planned but letting it grow heavy has given me a good grasp on the differences between FW and SW requirements. This has been one of the most enjoyable tanks I've setup but I sure am glad I have a few years of FW plant experience under my belt.

Very very nice. And I even spotted one of the seahorses! :) Are there any other fish/critters living in this setup that we can't see?

Three horses, a watchman goby/pistol shrimp team, snails, 4 peppermint shrimp and a (hitcher) bumblebee shrimp. That's about it.

I've not really thought about adding more critters. What I do have is a whole bunch of new macros and grasses sitting in CA but I'm not having them shipped until the weather is a bit more friendly. The waiting is agony :)
 
I'm kind of the same as you. I've set up 2 small reef tanks but with my limited budget/experience with coral neither really turned out like I wanted, so I've moved more into setting up macroalgae/plant tanks. That tank looks really nice.
 
Thats stunning. Could you go through your tanks stats, regimes, dosing, etc. We need more info and pics! :bum:

Is that seagrass at the front center? Looks like little small ovals.. maybe a Halophila? Or am I hallucinating? ;)

That is a shaving brush surrounded by c. mexicana plantlets. The main brush started to die off but produced plenty runners which are coming in quite nice.

So, maybe partial hallucinations. Still in the safe zone yet :)
 
I'm getting there. The one thing I'm really lacking is grasses so I'll be ordering those online unless some here wants to sell a few, hint hint hint ;)

Now I've finally got a QT tank set up I'm looking for a few more critters. Bangai cardinal? Bear in mind the occupants are two reidiis.

tank looks great with the new macros in it.

banggias should be safe in your tank. maybe some benthic blennies or small gobies.
 
Nice tank. I would agree with a small goby or blenny. Cardinals might do okay. I don't think they would mess with your horses, and should be large enough not to get eaten.
 
how much light is needed to keep a planted sw tank without any corals whatsoever, also do they require the same parameters as a reeftank?
