Noob-ish question even though I am not "New to the Hobby!" I have been keeping reef tanks for 10+ years, but always kept very minimal numbers of fish (more focus on corals and inverts). I re-set up my larger tank just over a year ago and would like to have a few more fish this time, but don't want to overdo it. Is there some kind of "rule of thumb" like there is for freshwater tanks?
I have a 75g display with 55g sump (approx. 1/3 of which is a refugium with chaeto, 2" LS, and a small amount of LR). Display has 60-75lbs of very porous and high surface area LR (I think it is mostly Pukani, but don't really remember!) plus 3" live sand bed. Approx. 1/3 of the LR in the display was transferred from a 8 year old tank. Lighting is 4x54W T5, 2xSeio M620 in tank circulation plus dual HOB overflow with Mag 9.5 return pump. System is skimmer less and I would prefer to keep it that way.
Current inhabitants:
Variety of soft and LPS corals. No interest in SPS!
2 ocellaris clowns and a GBTA
1 bangaii cardinal
1 yellow assessor
1 ruby red scooter blenny/dragonet (just added him yesterday - tank has lots of pods and he seems to also eat some frozen food)
2 cleaner shrimp
2 peppermint shrimp
1 emerald crab
2 tuxedo urchins
Good mix of snails, hermit crabs, and a tiny serpent star.
I was thinking of adding (not right away, but over time as they become locally available!) some kind of watchman goby with tiger pistol shrimp and a kole or tomini tang. Too many? Room for something else - if yes, suggestions!?
Thanks
