Hi guys,

I just bought a 75 rr over the weekend and am looking for some insight as to what equipment i sould look into running on it.
So Far:
Lighting: 660watts vho <included w/tank
Sump size: ?
Return pump: ?
Skimmer: ?
In Tank Circulation: 2xMJ900 on a reefkeeper 2

Any Ideas on the blanks??Any other input??

Also This will be my 1st VHO setup, what will that lighting be adequite for?

Thanks
Jeremy

As far as your sump and return, that is entirely up to you. I will say to go on the plus side, though. Personally, I would shoot for at least 30 gallons, which would give you enough room for a skimmer, etc. The return pump need not be more than 500-700 gph (or less). You will need more in tank circulation (much more, depending upon what you want to keep). 660 watts of VHO is adequate for just about anything, IME. I think your only exception here would be something like seagrasses.

I want it to be a softy/lps tank, what would you reccomend for in tank circ? I have a 29 gallon tank that i can use for a sump. Thanks for the help.

On my 75 in progress I will be using the following:

Skimmer - Octopus NW200
Sump - 20L (for now, upgrade to a larger custom acrylic at a later date)
Return pump - Ocean runner 3500 (900gph)

I know the return pump seems may be a little on the fast side for such a small sump, but I will be running it through either an OM squirt or SCWD so that should help dial it back. For additional flow I plan on running another OR 3500 for a closed loop manifold.

As far as lighting, how much is 660 watts of VHO going to cost you? Any particular reason why you chose VHO over T5?

That is a lot of light over a 75! So how many/what type of ballasts are you running? I would think you could keep any lps you wanted with those lights and maybe even sps if you were so inclined. You will need to up the flow considerably, I think. I have a mag7 for my return and 4 mj1200's for flow and there are still some low flow areas. Let's see some pics of the lighting. I guess I could see putting two more 4' lamps in but it would be tight. What kind of deal did you get for the tank if you don't mind me being nosy :)

Ursus- the lighting came with the tank

AustinVines- I paid 350 for the tank, stand+canopy, vho lighting (2 icecap 660's and 6 bulbs) so i will use what I have, I know the Softies and LPS will Love it, I was toying with the idea of some of the easier SPS too:rolleye1: Ill get you pics of the lighting tonight :D I like the idea of maxijet 1200's are yours on a wave maker? also I was thinking of a Quietone 3000 return pump rated at 780gph.

With that much VHO you'll be able to keep anything that you want. I had a thriving SPS tank with acros, encrusting monti. You name it. I switched over to halides recently mostly because I wanted the shimmer lines that you can't get with florescent lighting. I'm waiting for things to color up again but I'm starting to miss my VHOs.

If you do want to keep the SPS I would recommend more flow. I have a mag 9 for my return but I have two overflows for redundency. I also have a mak 4 (the damn thing is loud)on a closed loop.

I agree with adw and the rest. Go for as much flow as possible. I have a 75 with a mag 9.5 return. I have a seio 820 and 2 maxijet 900's in the tank also and there are still a couple dead spots I am trying to work on. I have VHO lighting also and love it. 4X110 3 10k and 1 Acticnic. I have been thinking of adding 2 more vho's. Let me know when it is up and running, Would like to see the lighting setup. For the sump bigger is better as far as I am concerned. Helps with stability in the tank also. I have a 50 gallon sump setup in the basement direcltly under my tank and it works out great. good luck with your setup and you got it for a great price!!

i just switched from a 55g to a 75g and i purchased a sump/refugium setup off ebay for like $249 that included the tank, queen (?) skimmer w/pump, return pump, overflow box and all....at only $25 shipping in a large wooden crate from CA to GA, i couldnt go wrong since my free time (to build one) is limited...i also purchased two aquaclear 4000 pumps (396gph)...they do an awesome job of circulating water!

Nice deal to say the least. At any rate, the lighting is more than adequate for any sps you would want to keep. I have 'trouble' with them growing all over the glass with only 440w of VHO. I would look into the seio pumps for your circulation. Maxijets are good, but you can get more flow in a much more diffused manner with the seios (diffused enough not to be an issue). For example, in my mixed 75 I have a Mag 7, maxijet 1200, seio 820, seio 1500, and a seio 2600. All this adds up to around 85x hr turnover. Granted, you don't necessarily need that much (yet), if you get sps, you will need more and more as they grow.

Just wanted to say I have a 3500 on my new 80g and through a SCWD, ball valve and check valve it is running perfect at around a little more than 500 gph.

Love that pump.

Thanks for all the help guys, I would like this tank to have a sand bed and be somewhat easy(reason for softies/lps) but i guess I could try some easier sps...as for flow what seios would you reccomend? what about 2 620's and can they be put on a wavemaker? what about clams?? woud they be happy in that lighting?? Also what do you guys think of the quiet one pumps? better off with a mag, ocean runner??

adw- any pics of your tank??

None of the seios will run on a wavemaker. What I did to vary the flow some was divert the flow using a maxijet (basically blowing perpendicular to the seio's output). That just functioned as a simple wavemaker. I would recommend the 1100s and 820s. Always go for a bit more than you think you will need, as they can be throttled back. All clams, IME, would do fine in that lighting. Just be sure to position them accordingly (i.e. crocea, maxima, even derasa on rocks or hard flat surface).

Where are your seios located and pointed in which direction??
