Was trying out something. I have been running my tank for a few months at arround 80 to 80.50. Biting was doing fine . Today though it hit 81.1. Thoughts. .? Who runs there tank on warmer side ?j
I have run my tanks on a warmer side, in the 81 degree range. The biggest problem is that you don't have any upward margin of error if there's a problem. Since heaters often have problems, I like to have a little more room.
my three iwaki pumps keep my tank in the 81 degree range. my heaters are not usually on. only come on if really cold or wife turns down the furnace. no glass heaters either.
Gah, if any of my tanks got over 78 I would freak out. My typical reef systems are ran at 75-78 year round and my Cool Water systems (Bandit Angels) run 65-72 depending on the year.
No disrespect, but I always cringe when I read a post like this. How do you know your Bandit "loves" 81 degree tank water? How long have you kept the Bandit at this temp? Based on your original post, it seems like only a few days. And you have kept the tank temp around 80 ish for several months. A natural environment for a Bandit, (because that is what we all strive to maintain for the long term health of our fish) doesn't involve keeping them in 81 degree temps. I have had years of successfully keeping Bandits, and as far as I can tell they thrive and are healthy long term at temps in the range of 65-76 degrees. I have had Bandits sent to me that were caught in only 90-100ft of water that did well in temps around 74-76. At higher temps though, there is a lack of oxygen in the water. The fish have to work harder to breath. Also, the high temp speeds up the metabolism of the fish and weaken their natural immunity. The fish are often suceptible to bacterial infections and parasite infestation.
I know this topic has come up often and our resident angel expert John Coppolino has quality advice and input when keeping a deepwater specimen like a Bandit. Maybe he can jump in with some info.
I apologize if the post came off as preachy, but I have a great fondness for the Bandit angel
