90 Gal pump return

What overflow are you using?
If its a standard 600 gph with a 1" drain line a Mag 7 will do just fine.

Hey Jim, nice to run into you again on the boards. Glad to hear that you have another tank in the works.

As for a return pump I think you might be better off going with a Mag 9.5 or Mag 12, depending on what you are keeping and the size of your sump along with baffel placement. A 3MDQX-SC or a 4MDQX-SC from Little Giant would be possibilities too.

I am going to use a 75 gallon allglass tank for a sump with 5 baffels . Would a mag 9.5 be enough? Jim

For a 1" drain line a Mag 9.5 should be a little too much, needing a ball valve to slow it down.

It really depends on your return plumbing, for a 1" drain your only going to get about 600 gph of water down. So you need to take in account your head loss for the return pump. If just a 1" straight pipe short run back up, Mag 7 or 9.5 is plenty. If you have a long run with several 90's, 45's ball valves and such you'll need to go bigger. Use the head loss calculator on the home page.

I'm using a MAG 12 for my return pump but I am also using 1.5" drain plumbing. An overflow box with 20" of teeth, 1" return line and feeding my calcim reactor from my return pump.

If you dont need all of that, no sense in spending the extra money on the pump, electric and adding extra heat to the water... But if you can use it, by all means do. It's not that much more. :)

9.5 after the head loss would be perfect. Mag 12 is to much for 1 inch pipe. I agree with Treg. I have a MAG 12 but i also have a 1.5 inch durso and bulkhead in my overflow. a 1inch wouldnt cut it. Do you really only have a 1inch bulkhead in the overflow? I thought they would have somthing bigger?

Jim,

The 180 is progressing slowly but is almost ready to setup and take on water. The delay has been due to some remodeling we have been doing in or downstairs rec room which is where the tank will eventually end up. I plan to make a trip to Glass Cages down here in TN to pick up the hood that matches the stand. Eventually, I'm going to retrofit three 250W HQI's and two 165W VHO actinics.

It is a all-glass rr aquarium. I dont have it yet supposed to get it today. Jim

Well a Mag 9.5 should be fine for your size tank anyways, but if it does have a 1.25 or 1.5" bulkhead and you can shove (cutting down the elbows and useing 2 45 degree elbows at the bottom) you could go up to a MAG 12 pump. Check it out when u get it.

I have a mag 9.5 on my 90gal oceanic RR tank with the durso, I don't see a reason for anything more unless you want to tee it off and run other equipment with it. With the mag 9.5 and a 30 gallon sump there is quite some water movement in the sump.I also have two tunze 6100 stream pumps for water movement in the display. I run my mag submuged and it does ad a little bit of heat to the tank especally when calcium starts to build up on the ceramic drive shaft. I would asume the mag 12 would run a little warmer. Good luck with your choice......John
