90 Gallon Upgrade!! Lots-O-Pics!!

Well the time is here!! I currently have a 24 gallon aquapod and my coral is growing at a outrageous speed. Im getting 3-4 new polyps a week on my zoa's and 1/4" of new growth about every 2 weeks on my sps. Im quickly running out of room. So with it being tax time and all we decided to do an upgrade.

Little about my Aquapod....

I have the ap 24 with a 24" 150 watt 20k and 2 pc actinics current outer orbit. I have setup a auto top off with a 18 gallon tub to hold my water ( I dont like topping off that much) I also have managed to stuff a Reef Octopus BH-100 on the back. It is a mixed reef with a few encrusting monti's, a couple monti caps, a couple acro's, and many many many zoanthids. here is a pic (not a very good one though)

Now on to the new tank...

I purchased a AGA 90 gallon reef ready. The tank will be in wednesday so I started collecting some equipment to get ready for
it. Here is the stand..

And here is the fish room. this took a little convincing of my better half but with all the wires and hoses hanging around the ap24 it wasnt really hard to do. this room is directly behind the wall where my ap is currently and where the 90 will be.

I just got this in the mail today. It is the Ocean Reef +1 from the filter guys. It came with the Dual TDS meeter, Pressure gauge, And the flush kit for the membrane.

TDS reading before DI

After DI

If anyone else has any experience with these chime in please. I have a constant flow out of the drain from the flush kit. Is this right? I wouldnt think water should be constantly flowing out of it. I have opened and closed the valve for the drain a couple times and it still flows.

I will be using a mag 9.5 as my return pump. The sump is a standard 55 gallon tank.

55galsump.jpg

I will be building a stand over the sump that will hold a 15 gallon refugium and a 10 gallon frag tank. The frag tank will be plumbed into the system. I have done some calculations in my head and I will have a total water volume of about 150 gallons.

Please If you have any Input ( positive or negative) feel free to chime in.

Some other stuff I picked up today!!

1 bag of aragonite sand I will be using smaller grain sand for the rest.

Random equipment the powerheads will be used to mix saltwater.

I worked out a trade with another reefer on here to get another outer orbit 24" like I already have. I think 150 watts on each side of the 90 will be enough. what does everyone else think?

I also picked up 3 bags of Instant ocean salt and 40 lbs of smaller grain sand tonight.

Look's like you are off to a great start. Take your time so you don't overlook anything. The worst thing is to say, I wish I did it this way. Good luck and keep us updated.

thats exactly what Im doing with this one. I have set up 3-4 tanks and I always say I wish I did this Or I wish I would have do that. This one will have everything I want in it.

Well Im going to pick up about 40 lbs of Lr today and store it in the sump untill I get the tank tomorrow. Also may pick up a couple korilla pumps. which ones do you all think would be best? If I need them....
I used the head loss calc here on RC and it says Ill be flowing about 788 gph

Have not tried Korilla yet. But, if you go over to the equipment forum I'm sure you good gather some good first hand info about them.

I have two Korillia nano's in my aquapod and I love the pumps just wondering what size I would need.

Well I picked up 55 lbs of some really nice looking live rock today. Ill get some pics later. I cant wait till the tank gets here tomorrow!!!

I would definately go with 2 #4s for the 90g. Place the nanos along the top for surface agaitation. Then #4s mid level for good flow aroung the rock sturctures and coral.

Its normal for the waste water to flow, I think it is like a 4:1 ratio for bad to good water...or something like that, I'm sure someone will know.

I just replaced all media on my RO/DI and didn't realize how much waste water was produced as I couldn't put the waste water tubing at the drain and used a bucket to collect it. Major discharge compared to the "good" water colllected. I have a kent maxxima 24 gpd unit. Kent's site stated that depending on the temp of the water, newness of the membrane, PSI etc will depend on how fast water is discharged.

Good luck with your 90. That is what I currently have.

Ok thats what the filter guys just said in an email From them. So just let the waste water flow? This is my first RODI I have always had smaller tanks so I just bought gallons of water from walmart. Im holding a steady pressure at 50 psi but once in a while it will jump to 60 psi and then back to 50. Is this ok?

So will it produce more waste when new or less?

She is starting to get a little mad!! almost a grand into the build and the tank isnt even here yet!!! Ill see what I can do but the korillia's may be a better choice.

Wait till everyone sees the rock I picked up today!!! Great shapes!!

I know a lot of people save some of the waste water for plants, garden watering ( depending on the size of the tank), pet watering, etc...maybe worth looking into. The water coming out is not very bad quality..

When you buy her flowers, will those count against the tank budget?

I'm jealous of your fish room!

I set up my 90 last august and here are my thoughts:

1. Seeing the megaflow overflow kit, it looks like you have a standard 1" overflow pipe. Since your sump is not in a basement, then get a mag 7 instead of a 9.5. A 1" pipe is rated for 600 gph.

2. I have Two Koralia 4's, and this is the right amount of flow. You may still have a couple dead spots in the corners that the nanos may be useful for (I was thinking of that myself).

3. Your TDS before DI seems high to me unless your house water is really bad. You will get about 4 gallons of waste water for every 1 gallon of good water, so this is normal (just take a shorter shower once a week and you save that amount of water easily).

4. I have a 300 watt heater, but have considered going to two 150's. That way if one gets stuck on then it is not an issue. I also live where it never gets cold enough that a single 150 would have to work too hard should the other one go out. Just a thought.

5. Get a refractometer while you are at it if you don't have one already. Also get some calibration fluid for it.

6. Get a better thermometer than that stick on strip. Those do not tend to be accurate.

7. I wish I had a fish room :D

Great start. Keep us updated.

The overflow is a 1 1/4" drain.

I was looking at the korillia 4's today but I thought they might be too much flow...

The water might be really bad here. Its city water but in the country. If that makes any sense??!!

I was going to run the 300 watt heater and a 100 watt just as a backup.

I do have a refractometer. one of my first purchases when I got into this hobby.

I have the digital therm that will be in the sump this stick on is just for a quick ref on the display.

I have always said I wish I had a fish room and now I have one and it isnt big enough!!
