The color temperature is to low. That is why it is so cheap. It is not suitable for a reef tank. The light will be to yellow. You need cool white not warm white. The minimum color rating should be 8000K.

The color temp probably isn't really the problem. It's probably the output. People forget that once upon a time the "natural" look was favored and the most commonly used MH bulbs were 5000-6500k bulbs. Granted....we grew a lot of brown corals back then.

I would not call it "favored" as there was not the kelvin range that we have to choose from now a days.

Experts will tell you 20K Metal Halides give you the best growth of all Kelvin temperatures, and lower temps like 14k gives a very nice look, still grows coral nicely but not as well. 10k T5 or VHO is standard in Fish Only tanks, not bad aesthetically, but not good for coral growth. These LEDs are not suitable for a successful reef tank.

6700k is what natural sunlight is so a bulb being 8000k doesn't really mater as for 20000k bulbs are better for color but 6700k-10000k bulbs are better for growth

I believe he is an expert. I don't believe he told you that. Corals grow best around 6500-10k because that is the light that their symbiotic algae need/like to thrive. The blue light is for us to view the color. I'm sure that if Dave knew you were dropping his name with incorrect info he would be pretty upset.

Fishteen - you probably just have remembered it backwards.

Or an interpretation issue:20k may be "best" for color etc growth. Kinda how you want to define "best"

What is best all depends on how much of the light is in the specific color temps that make corals grow: around 400-500 and 600-700 nanometers give or take. A strong blue bulb or diode that is heavy in the 450-460 range will outgrow a strong "daylight bulb" heavy in the 500-600 range.
