It is either submerged too deep or is operated under a canopy or in a very humid/salt laden environment. If it is submerged to the correct level in an open top tank in a typical household, it should go 6-9 months. Under a canopy or in a fishroom or submerged too deeply, this time span drops quickly. Make sure that the water line is 1/4- 1/2" below the marked line which should be regarded as the maximum, the ideal is a little below that. If you are getting gurgling or slurping noises, it is too deep and saltwater is going through the air intake. Anything you can do to reduce the salt mist and salt laden air around the intake will go a long way as well.
