After a very long time (about 12 years) from having my last saltwater tank, I am setting up a 29 gal reef tank with a 10 gal sump. I am looking for a skimmer that is compact enough for the sump, either in-sump or hang-on, and of course space is at a premium. Eventually, I want to change my 100 gal freshwater tank to a reef tank and either use the skimmer that I buy for the 29 gal as the back-up or supplement skimmer for the 100 gal.
The Tunze 9010 fits my sump, and gets better reviews, than any other small reef tank skimmer on the market. If I used it for the 29 gal would the "overkill" size cause problems?
Would it just mean I had to clean the collection cup less often?
Would the water flow through the skimmer cause problems for such a small volume sump?
What is the mimimum area, including free waterflow space around the skimmer, that I can have with the the 9010?
Thanks for your help.
