9011 skimmer

Hello everyone,

I'm researching how to get rid of microbubbles (or at least reduce the amount) in my tank. The skimmer is working great to pull junk out, but the microbubbles are collecting near and on the surface of the water --> it makes the water look dirty. Recently, I had the skimmer off overnight as I added AlgaGen ReefPods to the tank and the water looked so clear. When I turned the skimmer back on, I could see the microbubbles being pushed out of the skimmer through bottom slit on the front side of the skimmer.

Here are the specs of my tank:
60 gallon cube, no sump, been running for 14 months
Skimmer has been running for 1.5 months in the tank.
Mostly coral, total length of fish 5-6 inches.

Is it possible I bought too much skimmer as the bioload for the tank is pretty low?

TIA for any help!

Make sure that none of the sump kit is installed, the bottom plate should be the slotted one and the coupler between the pump and intake should be left out. Unless you installed them, they won't be installed out of the box. Close the front intake grate, that door slides shut and this will reduce bubbles, it forces the skimmer to recirculate the water and bubbles rather than vent them out and take in new water, this slows response time but it still should be more than sufficient for this size tank. A thin floss pad on the bottom lid/tray like this one-

Roger,
Any tips on how to reduce micro-bubbles on a 9011 thats using the sump kit ? Seems like a lot of microbubbles "leak" out through the bottom area, and the hole out back. The sponge does a good job of catching the bubbles coming out of the "tube".

Thanks,
Herbie

Hello Roger,

I followed your suggestion to close the door on the front intake grate. I purchased this brand new, so I installed the skimmer just the way it came in the box. I thought I would give it some time to get rid of micro bubbles, but I am still seeing microbubbles. The microbubbles are coming from just under the closed door on the front intake grate.

Any other suggestions?

I have a 500 gph about 2 inches from the skimmer, just under the yellow line that indicates where the water line should be. if it helps, I can see the microbubbles being pushed out of the front bottom panel of the skimmer.

Yes, in most cases I would recommend it for 60-120 gallons, bigger is possible if it is soft corals or fish only.
