9440 size

Roger,

I'm interested in getting the 9440 and was wondering whether a 15 x 21 foot print is large enough to accommodate it.

Graeme,

That is what i read as well but i hoped that perhaps the width was a bit smaller since the pump and the output were on opposite sides. Do you think that might be the case?

Thanks,
Gabe

Hi Gabe,

I will double check a unit at work tomorrow but the pump and return pipe are pretty much fixed.
Please PM or email if you do not hear back as I have a very busy week.

Regards
Graeme

Hi Graeme, Roger,
Another question on the size issue:
I have a 9420 on order, but would like to proceed with my sump plans. The vertical opening on my stand is at 34" tall. How tall can my sump be, while still allowing the skimmer to be placed inside easily? I don't want to have to disconnect the sump and slide it out to remove the skimmer cup or the skimmer in general.

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks Graeme for your help. I really hope to get good news :). Along the same topic as Jeff, how easily does the collection cup come off? Is it just a matter of pulling it up vertically?

Thanks,
Gabe

I just picked up my 9420. I have been very curious as to the actual foot print which Tunze says is a diameter of 18". As I suspected this is not really the case. I measure the actual rectangular footprint to be about 17" x 9". I would guess the 9440 footprint is about 17" x 11".

The height of the body is 16" to the bottom of the collection cup, the cup itself adds another 6" to the height, and needs a little over 3" (bare minimum) to be removed.

Hope this helps.

Mothra, what size tank are you running your 9420 on? I don't see it in stock anywhere. How'd you get one?

It's going to be on a 360g fish & softy tank. I'm in progress of building the tank now. I ordered mine a couple months ago and got it through my LFS. I doubt you'll see them in stock anywhere, as with most Tunze stuff the demand exceeds supply.

Atomic Blast!

Thanks for the info, that helped out a lot and answered my questions.

gabe3d, sorry but I haven't started the unit u[ yet as I am working to complete my new sump, I should be able to transfer to the new one within the next 10 days.

JPF & Mothra:
what is the approximate diameter without the riser tube & pump? I am asking because I'd like to know how much room I have to play with in getting the skimmer in and out of the sump while it's under my stand.

The opening of my stand measures 28" (vertically) and I'm planning a 15" sump, leaving me 13" of access space to remove the skimmer without having to disconnect and pull out the sump. Is this enough room? Am I asking for problems here? Is there a possibility of making the sump taller?

Thanks & I'm so jealous that you have your skimmers already. I'm still waiting for mine.

Opihi:
Call it 9" diameter just to be safe. I wouldn't make the sump much taller, as it is you'll need to tip the skimmer on its side and you'll want some room for your hands too. You don't want to be banging it on the sump and scratching yourself up every time you remove it.
