A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

I did find all plastic ones but from my inexperience and me liking shiny things I went towards the chrome thingy :D.
I understand the allure of shiny things (insert Gollum joke here), but most things won't stay shiny very long when they're immersed in salt water. I think the plastic pump stands a much better chance of long-term survival.

Doesn't that depend on the depth of the well? I'm thinking it will be more of a pool because of the fact that we will not to have to dig deep; 2 - 4 meters max. I really want to use my pumps since it the water from the well will not require a lot of head. Dunno, just thinking out loud here.

If you dig only for a shallow pool for you to pull water from you may pull more water than your pool can saturate through the substrate. So if I understand correctly you want to pull in fresh seawater from a shallow pool and circulate it through your aquarium???? Is this correct??? If so you may pull your water source down further than your saturation through the pool can keep up. Usually when a well is drilled or put in they do what is called a draw down test and pump the water at full head and measure how much the water will drop. If you really want clean water you would want to pull further down than in the upper levels where contaminents might still exist from ships and pollution. Just a thought..

Looks great

Rain

Rain

We are done with the shuttering today and planned to have the concrete poured tomorrow. But guess what: It rained cats and dogs today and it seems we will delay the pouring. The fish farm collected nearly 5 inches of rain in little less than an hour, and it's not even totally sealed yet. Aaaaahhh, out of all the days in the year it could of rained, why today?? :(

Sneak Peak

Sneak Peak

Hello,

Just a filler update. Here is a sneak preview of where we are thus far:

This is only 1 coat of paint. I'm thinking 2 will be enough.

We might pour the concrete today :)

I did find all plastic ones but from my inexperience and me liking shiny things I went towards the chrome thingy :D. How does this look, it is rated at 6,000 gph and for aquarium use. I'm thinking of starting with 5 and allow for upgrades:

All the specifications are detailed. Nowhere in the writeup do I see any mention of saltwater application for this pump. Here in the states we are accustomed to seeing our ponds in freshwater, not saltwater. Are you sure this pump is going to be appropriate for your seawater system? I'm doubting it.

Beautiful build. I've been tagging along since day one and I'm mighty impressed. Thank you for sharing the build with us, not just the 'pretty, shiny, end result'.

FYI, you might want to consider the Reeflo Pumps, specifically the Manta Ray Gold. 1-1/2" in/out, it is pressure and flow rated. Commercial Duty pumps come in 1HP, 1.5HP and 2HP.

Good luck,
Russ

Yeah different sites have different "specifications". Here is the site where it specifically says saltwater: http://www.graystonecreations.com/pondmaster_hy-drive_pumps.shtml

i looked at Reeflo Pumps and I'm impressed. However, those are external use only and I'm looking for something that I can fit inside the aquarium for water flow. I have 2 pumps that pump into the tank for turnover, those are rated at 40,000 gph or 45,000 gph.. don't remember exactly.

Thank you for showing interest. I made sure I posted everything regarding the build because it is an unusual build (somewhat) :).

What can go wrong will go wrong

What can go wrong will go wrong

Some updates:

We got the concrete and the shuttering (the boards that hold the concrete in place until it dries) broke at one end and we lost have of the concrete. :(

It was fixed and we got a new batch of concrete and poured it. However, this will delay the project a couple of days.

It looks like I'm going to paint the refugium with epoxy as well just to make sure it doesn't leak. I'm a bit worried about having poured the concrete twice.

Salam Alakum Nahham. I take my hat off to you with this sweet tank build. I'll be following this tank build goodluck.

Refugium's Progress

Refugium's Progress

Hello,

Just thought I'd post how the refugium looks right now. We are done with the walls and working on the "partitions" inside.

I didn't think it will look this big. The final dimensions of the refugium is 5m (16.4ft) x 3m (9.8ft) x 1.4m (4.6ft).

I might be able to use part of it to grow food for the tank, hopefully..
