A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

been reading since the beginning .... this will be great ! but ..... you really should have just rounded it off to 20,000 gal .... whats another 1000 . lol

i would think about some sort of UV sterilizer from the sea to tank lines...i would be paranoid about pathogens, a couple very large high capacity carbon blocks might not be a bad idea either to try and polish the water of any nasties that could be in the sea water...just cause gas, oil and diesel float doesnt mean a passing boat cant pull it into the water column just as your intake pumps fire up and flood your tank with god only knows what...otherwise this is one smokin cool project...i will anxiously be following along..

I'm no expert on tanks this size, but I don't think you'd need to worry about a skimmer. With all the water exchange between the tank and ocean, I don't see the point of making the investment. On the other hand, if you had a need to isolate the tank from the ocean (as in Red Tide situations) it wouldn't be a bad idea to have one, if you needed to keep it closed off for more than a few days. There shouldn't be a need to supplement nutrients either, as they will constantly be replenished with the constant flow coming in. I'd make a call to Sea World (seriously) and ask them what they think. Maybe consider contacting some of the larger aquariums here in the US, or abroad and get their input as well. This will certainly be a sweet tank when it's done and I'm looking forward to seeing it's completion. Best of luck!

The seating area looks like it will be very nice. Will you have a canopy over it? Aside from making viewers more comfortable, a shade over the viewing area might make it easier to see into the tank. It always seems easier to see into a tank that is more brightly lit than where you're sitting/standing to view it.

I was thinking the same thing... almost like an underground viewing area, or at least fully enclose the viewing area, much like something you would at one of the large aquariums.

sure you have this covered.. but you have protection on the glass right now.. bubble wrap plywood. ect..

looks fantastic.....

Well, I'd have to go alllll the way across the country to end up on Long Island in the first place (Phoenix, AZ to New York, NY), so that last little bit of extra distance across the island probably wouldn't be a deal-breaker. Then again, from what I hear of New York traffic, it might take almost as long as the prior 2,500 miles. :)

It's not ALLLL the way at the end, I have to travel west to go there, so there is still more of the island to see.

Hey Its Crypt keeper from Saltwaterfish. Im very happy for you that you posted here and are getting the information needed. Congrats and I have been lurking. This build is amazing. Id love to see it in person.

I'm an academic so I have to be precise :D, but I should of said ~20,000 but then I thought some people here will do the calculation and find out its less :P. The full system should be somewhere around 24,000 gallons if that makes you happy :)

Thank you for your comment. I am changing stuff as I go along. My main concern is sustainability. I want the tank to be a minimum maintenance tank. This should include the maintenance of the filtration system. I'll keep your advice in mind though :)

Thanks for your comment. I did try to contact several big tanks to ask for advice with varying success. Will keep trying though. :)

I always enjoy your comments KarlBob. As I always say, it is a work-in-progress but we are already thinking about it. It all depends on the "popularity" of the tank to the stakeholders :D

Thanks very much Damascus for the heads-up. I was happy to post here and get so much good comments and advice. It a pleasure to find so much people wanting to help someone they don't know for the sake of the hobby. I appreciate it and thank you all. :)

Things to see in the UAE:
The Burj Kalifa (previously Burj Dubai), the Burj Al-Arab, the Palm Islands, and this aquarium. Oh, and maybe the indoor snow skiing center, too.

That's way too much. I don't think its that big of a deal. I will, however, be happy to welcome anyone interested in seeing the tank, when it's done of course. :)

Have you looked into having a saltwater well drilled? We looked into doing it in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. It was expensive, but the well was going to be around 700ft deep or more. At that depth you wouldn't have to worry about red tide and little concern for pollution, especially from the freighters in the water behind your aquarium.

Nahham, well done. Such a huge tank is every reefer's dream! Great idea to combine your fish farm with the aquarium. Are there no ships cruising close to the build? It wouldn't be funny to see a huge tank ship swimming in your aquarium someday...

Keep us updated!
