A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

PWJ011 design is to my liking. i really like that everything is going smoothly and you will have the tank filled by the end of the week.is the live rock taken care of already?

Can't you just paint it with ships and cranes like the harbor so it looks invisible :)

No I can't :). There were plans to change the sea front on the other side to a residential/commercial area; you know low rise buildings and cafes and stuff. The economic crisis slowed those plans, but I'm hoping they will come back.

Nahham, great build. You are doing something that most of us can only dream of. However, As stated by techreef, are you not concerned about introducing some exotic species in your part of the ocean where they do not belong? You mentioned keeping "Nemo" clowns that are not native there. Sooner or later they will pair up and mate regularly, Im afraid that with your system being open to the ocean, its just a matter of time before some of the fry make it to the ocean. Same goes for other species that may not reproduce in out smaller tank by could in yours. Another concern would be exotic alge, hopefully you are planning on keeping only natively collected alge in your refugium. Please dont take it the wrong way, Im just throwing some thoughts I had out there just as a precaution.

Thank you for your comment. We are all worried about that :). I mentioned that I'm starting with local species only, which actually include clown fish. If I was ever to include exotic fish, I'll be taking everyone's advice on how to 'clean' the water before returning it to the sea. No need to worry about this :). You can look at my post #476 for what I'm planning to do.

Thank you for voting :). I'm hoping it will be filled by the end of the week. I hoped before and it didn't work out :D. The live rock will be taken care of soon. It has been windy for several days now, waiting for it to calm down.

After free diving for nearly an hour to get all the pipes in place, one of the workers yanked one of the two pipes and broke off the return value which we lost. So we are currently working with one pump. Even though, I am happy to report that we filled the refugium and a 1/3 of the tank. The glass people told me to go a 1/3 at a time. This is a trial fill so I didn't have any sand in the refugium but I can still see a difference between the sea and the water in the refugium and tank. The tank and refugium were already dirty with sand and other stuff so I'm thinking it will clear up even more.

I asked the municipality people to come take sample of the water if not tomorrow then by Sunday. Hoping for the best.

All in all, a good day :)

I'm still waiting for votes regarding the arabesque design. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look at my post #497. How long should I give it? A week?

Just wondering are you taking sand from a local source? or are you not even having sand in the tank? and Rock as well? are you making your own? or Aqua culturing it? i couldnt fathom aquascaping a tank that big.... Maybe they will loan you a crane :P

The sand will come from a local source. I'm just looking for the best place and way to get it. It isn't a bad thing that we own a construction company :). I'm also contacting the municipality branch that deals with paving roads and such because they deal with beach sand as well. Maybe a truck load will be enough. I can't believe I'm talking about a truck load and a personal aquarium :).

As for rocks, I am thinking the best idea is to get some rock from the sea, with the permission of the ministry of course, and have the majority brought in from the place where they sell big rocks :), I think they are called crushers but I might be wrong. A knowledgeable person with the rock structure in the area mentioned it should work.

Right now though I'm just testing to see that everything is working properly and that the water flows as it should.

Care to vote for how you want to see the front of the tank? If so go to post #297 :)

Many of us can't believe it either, which is one of the reasons why so many people are excited about this build. If you have a choice, try to get aragonite sand rather than silica sand. With this much connection to the ocean, the pH buffering effects of aragonite sand might be less important, but it could still come in handy.

There's another truck load, maybe two!

Nahham,

As for the LEDs, you don't have to choose a color. Another reefer doing a large install in his basement in Canada has installed a most excellent LED system that is computer controlled for light color changes in his home.

His user name is nineball and he is building a beautiful tank in his home. It is very large although yours is, ummm , let's just say a little bigger.

Anyway, I am subscribed to his thread and I will look back to see if I can find the name of the LED company for you. The nice thing is they can be adjusted to provide a nice white color for good lighting all the way to different colors at low levels for accent lighting. Imagine needing the white light for an event near the the tank and then as the evening progresses going to a nice soft blue...... Very nice!!!!!

I'll see if I can get that link for ya........:reading:

Another note is that my son had to spend some time at Riley Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis following a surgery and they had a some of these lights installed in the ceiling of our wing and they were gorgeous being set to progress through a rainbow of colors. Nick absolutely loved them, so di I to be honest. Very calming and aestetically pleasing.

Cree brand LED lighting is the industry leader. They twice the efficiency (brightness/energy conservation) than anything else on the market. http://www.cree.com/

You can buy a fixture or a roll of strip lights with full RGB colour programming. You can also focus the bulbs with special lenses, and of course have programmed lighting sequences and a remote.

I have used fibre optics with colour wheels for uplighting jellyfish tanks from the bottom. It makes a unique effect and with optic cables you can illuminate an acrylic viewing panel. It will give the illusion that the whole tank is changing colour. I know your panels are glass, but you could use a thin laminate layer or illuminate another viewing area such as a dome or floating top view panel.

Thanks for the info Mr.Wilson. I just hijacked that link and am using it to gather info on sustainability opportunities for my school district. Heading out to pic up info from a local vendor on Cree lighting options for the schools.....

Thanks again.

Isn't RC great!!!!!!!!

I would just issue every kid an LED headband so they can remain "focused". It also makes it easier to keep track of them and they are ready to put in their shift at the mine after school :)

This one looks spaceage... http://www.electronicsinfoline.com/New/Lights_and_Optics/too-cool-rainbow-headband.html

HAHAHAHA Very cool. We could even count that as a class when each kid makes their very own headband....

We could turn off all the lights in school and they could all just use their own little lights......

NAHHAM, WOW!!!

Love it, looking forward to seeing your tank on TV!!!

You are having so much fun building your tank and were having a blast watching it progress. Have you considered offering your guests to go scuba diving in the tank?

i vote mdf 255. Assuming mdf stands for medium density fiber board. What are your plans to treat it protecting it from the weather. MDF is usually used in dry conditions.
